Why don't we see reader ratings on the back of books?

Working as I do in a public Library, I’ve often wondered why there are not reader ratings on the back of books similar to those on films.

Recently I’ve read a few books that really are quite upsetting.
True, the skill of the author is laudable.
To write a passage in these days where we are continually exposed to extreme gore, violence and sex stuff …To write a passage that can leave one upset for weeks is truly an achievement.
Some of these books are really good books;

Little Bee -Chris Cleave
Charlotte Grey -Sebastian Faulks
Senior Vivoand the Coca Lord -Louis de Bernières

Just a few…great books…but should be rated for violent content IMHO

Japanese Manga have age appropriate ratings on the back.
Why not make this general?
