I used to love MAD - wish it was still around!
me too. Bit like a kid’s version of Private eye
ST, Was that the one with the boy with sticky out ears on it?
Yes it was. That’s no way to talk about me
He did look a bit like Prince Charles!
Yes with the goofy teeth as well.
Have had my ears pinned now and my teeth straightened
Then you must look like an Adonis now!! ![]()
You’ve been peeking havent you
I remember the Beano, Beezer, Topper, Dandy, Victor and Hotspur - my older brothers used to buy them but I read them too, so recall many of the characters.
By the time I was old enough to get pocket money and buy comics, the popular ones were Sparky and Wham. I didn’t get them every week, just occasionally, so my memory of the characters is hazy -
Nosey Parker, Keyhole Kate, Dreamy Dave & Dozy Dora, Georgie’s Germs.
Another character called Billy Whizz sticks in my memory - I used to love that cartoon boy, always racing around
- I can picture him now - but I can’t recall which comic he was from.
I passed a brightly coloured narrowboat on the canal last year which was named Billy Whizz, with a brilliant cartoon pic of the character painted on the side.
It brought back memories - I also thought it was an amusing name for a boat that travels about 3 mph!
Yes - that’s the one - his name was Alfred E. Neuman,

Popeye was my all time favourite, but he was on the telly back in the fifties.
I used to rush home from school to catch the programme that started at 5:25 pm.
The comics I read were ‘Lion’ with Paddy Payne RAF pilot flying Mosquitos and Beaufighters fighting Jerry, I learned a lot about airplanes, and not just British ones either, from reading his exploits. There was ‘Archie the Robot’ and his two handlers Ted Richie and the other bloke who’s name escapes me. I later read Eagle, but apart from Dan Dare I can’t remember any other names from it.
My very first memories were of ‘Rupert Bear’ I had all his annuals, got one every Christmas, and ‘Captain Pugwash’ I think they both appeared in the Daily Express.
As I progressed into my teens, Biggles was my favourite, and I bought loads of Biggles paperbacks, no more comics then, just a weekly called ‘Revellie’ Note the price a twopence hapeny’

Foxy, wasn’t the Reveille, a bit ‘nudge nudge’ in those days?
I suddenly thought of Roy Of The Rovers and l think he was in the Tiger, my brother used to get. He also got the Lion comic. I liked the Lion.
We got Look and Learn on Sundays it was really interesting .
I was a bit too young to know about those things then Arty…

Yeah… and me.
I suppose, today’s equivalent would be the Sport… if it still exists?
As well as a bit of smut, I think there were some interesting topics Arty, I seem to recall something called ‘Just fancy that’ and would describe some very unusual or unbelievable fact. I also recall some art performed on typewriters using letters of the alphabet.
I think you’re right @Artangel, I remember my Grandmother used to get Reveille and I wasn’t allowed to look at it!!!
