I only got comic books when my family was traveling to read on the plane. My favorites were Scooby Doo and Archie. My favorite characters were Shaggy from Scooby Doo and Betty and Veronica from Archie.

They are just a few from my young days, I was a topper, beano fan, but I read all sorts, my absolute favourite although I can’t remember his name or the comic, was the young lad who had an army of little soldiers who he controlled from a device on his wrist, I used to think how cool that would be ( still do)…
As a very little girl I had a crush Walter Hottle Bottle from a comic called Jack and Jill. I remember the Four Mary’s, but they seemed a bit goody goody to me. I used to read my older sisters Jackie, and when they mentioned a “flat mate” I thought it meant a best friend, like a flat out best friend.
I loved the Beano and was a member of the Beano Club. Dennis, and Mini the Minx were my favourites…but I remember something about a character who had tiny people living in his head and worked all the controls to make him go through the day. Don’t know if that was the Beano or something else, but it fascinated me because I actually believed we all had little people operating us!
Only mine were mice, not people.
Oh I remember that story. It was in the Beezer, and it was called The Numskulls (which is what the little people inside his head were called). I loved that story! I didn’t actually get the Beezer, but my little brother did, and I read it every week.
I had Bunty every week and my best friend who lived next door had Judy, so we used to swap them with each other. I loved The Four Marys, and longed to go to a boarding school as a result. I think I would have been disappointed if I had gone - I’m sure it would have been nothing at all like the Four Marys’ experience
Art, the only other name I remember is Dr Gull and I think she was the headteacher. My favourite Mary was Simpson and I seem to remember that she was more ‘common’ than the other three.
Yes! I had that ladybird ring for years too! And then there was the little scottie brooch which came free with it, I think in the second edition maybe? It was a black scottie and a white scottie, standing next to each other.
My faves too plus Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx, and The Bash Street Kids.
It was in the Grauniad a couple of weeks ago that Spotty (Bash St Kids) has become Scotty, following in the footsteps of Fatty, who was renamed Freddy, with both changes made over fears the nicknames could be seen as offensive.
