These are chilblains in the early stages - swollen, itchy and painful - if not treated the skin can crack and become even more painful and, in some cases, infected.
I suffered from chilblains when I was getting on for my tenth birthday. I was forced to drink cod liver oil – not neatly packaged today with a shell of dissolvable stuff which means you don’t have to taste it. It had a foul taste.
