Snails…I was watching The Hairy Bikers on the box last night eating barbequed snails, I’ve been tempted to give them a go for quite a while but just can’t quite summon up the courage.

Our local village, here in SW France, hosts an escargollage (fete of snails) each summer. We join the locals in the snail cleaning, which more about removing the ones that are not moving. Then they are cooked in mountains of very garlicky butter.
However I can’t manage more than about ten or twelve before I’m mollusced out. The garlic butter is lovely for dipping bread into. The snails are no more than ok - bit chewy with little flavour.

That sounds fun. I’d imagine that up to twelve snails would be sufficient, washed down with some local wine I trust :slightly_smiling_face:

I went on a cruise to Fiji in 1980. One night was French night.
Snails - Escargots - and Frogs Legs were on the menu. I had one frog leg but gave the snails a miss.

Aren’t frog’s legs supposed to taste like chicken?

After more than 40 years I honestly do not remember. I do remember the garlic butter dip.
Maybe that was so strong it disguised the taste of the frog. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Never seen frogs legs on a menu or for a village event. There are tons of frogs down here - if you live near a pond you hear them all night long. But they don’t seem to be used for food. Everything else and every bit of everything is frequently available. Our local cheapy restaurant (4 courses for 14 euros, 15 euros with wine, 16 euros with coffee after) has a daily changing menu. As well as the ‘always available’ steak & chips or duck hearts & chips the specials are usually poule au pot or tete de veau. I stick to the duck hearts - yum.

Mum used to make me eat frogs legs and then said…“make sure you have eaten all your lunch before you jump down and go for your swim”…
:frog:
It was just that horrible tapioca I didn’t like…

Accept my apologies Boot, I assumed you had become veggie in your teenage years as most of my veggie friends did. I also assumed…Incorrectly…that you had become veggie either out of a love for the planet or the cruelty to animals…
It may surprise you to learn that I also ate very little meat as a child, and I would patiently pick off all the fat before eating it. I still do. My diet has increased in variety dramatically since those childhood years and now I’ll eat most things (except the fat grisly bits) but beef and pork are mainly eaten for Sunday Dinner, with fish being my main meal through the week.

I also am allergic to prawns even though I like them, but to eat just one would send me scurrying to the toilet from both ends. I can however eat crab, muscles, shrimps and lobster with no after effects. There will never be a time when insects appear on my diet unless they were concealed inside my Mcdonalds burger without my knowledge.
Sorry again for the assumptions…Foot is placed firmly in my mouth…

I no longer have dairy as there are excellent plant alternatives.
With the except of chocolate…although I’ve tried dairy free versions.
