Whats wrong with screw-s,?

I thought this thread was going to be about the poor quality of screw heads these days. Particularly annoying when you’re trying to remove one and it just goes to mush.

Most of the time that happens from using the wrong screwdriver Annie.
A snug fit into the slot and a firm grip of the tool usually does the trick…

The Wife didn’t know you just wanted to start a “Thread”

It took me far too many years to discover that there are different types of Phillips head screwdrivers (Ph0, Ph1, Ph2 etc)

Me too Bruce, and I’ve made a mess of quite a few screw heads before I discovered that.

Yep, you need a PHD to get the right screw driver, I thought I needed a PH4, turned out to be a plain old PH3, guess I’ll never use this now!!

Well the handyman must have had the right screwdriver head as he got the screws out faster than it’s taken me to write this post.

He had one of those drill sized screwdrivers, but I didn’t check the brand. I’m guessing that you can use a drill-type for both drilling and screwing if you have the right attachments and it’s got to be more powerful than my bosch electric handheld (similar to the one below) which seems to be made for the ladies rather than the laddies.

Most likely the last thing the Man needs to ask his wife for is a good box for screws. … :joy:

Go with a great medium rare Porterhouse Steak, bake potato and glass of red wine. …

A small good quality center punch and hammer can knock em loose with a couple raps on the outer circumference… It’s an old trick along with a good pair of small Diagonal Pliers /cutters pinched on the head of a stubborn screw to loosen it. A drill bit with a reverse cutting ground into it can also remove and loosen a stubborn screw. Needs a reversing Battery powered drill motor or impact.

Sounds like good advice to me Zac.

For larger bolts and screws I’ve got some left handed taps of various sizes.

I have a tool which has various bits - basically you hit it with a large hammer and the action turns the screw anti clockwise a very tiny amount. A few blows with this usually loosens a screw enough for more conventional methods of removal. it seems to work even if the screw slot is damaged.

Funnily enough I used it yesterday or the day before on a couple of very long security screws in the hard wood door jamb that had rusted slightly and were impossible to remove any other way. One of them snapped off but that didn’t matter.

Great tips. Perhaps we should have a new thread about this (no pun intended!)

My next question would be how to remove a sticky raw plug…

Just drill it out Annie…

Screw the screw into the rawlplug until it grips but not enough to expand it. Then grip the screw head with pliers and pull. That often works.

I know what you mean, I’d forgot about those Bruce, it’s been a while since I saw one. The sort of thing you find on car boot sales. They are so handy, I’ll look out for one.
:+1:

I bought one a couple of weeks ago, when you search for “Impact Driver” the system displays the cordless wrenches like tyre fitters use, it took quite a bit of modifying to find this mechanical tool
Be careful, these don’t just rotate anti clockwise, they can also be used to tighten.

Screws & Washers are vital to the aspiring DIY Zealot.
Back in 1985. I was in the man cave. Neat little cabinet with pull out draws. Washers being sorted and LABLED.
Well they may come in handy ONE Day!

“Can I help you you Daddy”. Said my 10yr old daughter. “Of course Sweetheart. I’m late for an appointment”. [At the Pig & Whistle :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:]
Fast forward to last Month and decluttering.
Came across the draw with 20 washers.
Rusted together. With the LABLE marked as. “CRAP” .
I Just knew they would come in useful ONE Day.

I seem to recall one used for tightening Spitty, I think it was some kind of security fitting that wouldn’t come undone easily by the criminal fraternity…

I know QES, I’ve also got a little angel in her fifties with two kids also…
