I learned in my dad’s big Ford Zypher, with bench seats and steering column gear change. My very own first car was a wee red VW Golf, but I struggled as it had floor gear change,
Soon got the hang of it though on a quiet, very straight country road, where I drove up n down through the gears for a while. But it certainly threw me after the Zypher.
I drove different cars on the farm and my dad’s car on the road when I was still under age. The first car I had when I was of legal age was a Hillman Imp.
I wanted a bigger motor bike, passed my test on a Honda 50. Dad though I would kill myself on a big bike so lent me £60 to buy a 1964 mini van after I passed my test for a car in 1967 at 17.
It had been owned by the mechanic at the Bus garage where my Mum worked as a clippie.
It was in great nick, and he even came down to help me with the servicing and brakes.
Since then I’ve taken more engines out of vehicles for big ends, piston rings, clutches etc than most people have had hot dinners.
My first car was a Fiat 131 Miafiori, the biggest pile of ever to have four wheels. I only bought it because I was desperate to own one at the time (having had a motorbike for ages) and it was going cheap, not helped by my own naivety when it came to cars . This thing was the worst and I had the displeasure of watching it dissolve into rust before my very eyes.
