Well yeah, there is that.
Decades before we got a fringe…
Can’t remember if my fingers were frozen
My ice poles were well frozen. We used to get them in a box from Sainsbury’s.Just a case of chucking them in the little ice box untill frozen solid, snipping of the tip of the long plastic sachet and off you went. Blackcurrant, lime, strawberry and lemon
None of this Cornish seasalt and caramel in those days!
I still have those in my freezer today. The cola ones are the best😎
Did anyone have ‘Jubblys’ ? A great big triangular block of orange flavoured Ice. They used to last ages in the long hot summer days of the fifties and early sixties. In fact, me and my mate Bill could cover several miles along the hedgerows looking for birds eggs (Yes I know) before we finished them.
I remember them but I don’t think they were as big in the late 70s
Do you remember long blocks of ice cream that were wrapped in cardboard. You could cut a slice and put a wafer on each side, it was so convenient. I can’t find it anywhere now. You’d think it would be all the rage now we’re trying to move away from plastic packaging.
You can still buy the wafers but not the ice cream.
They were almost as big as a dogs head back in the day Ralph…They didn’t half make yer teeth tingle…
We used to get those blocks of Ice Cream off the Ice Cream Van, no fridges or freezers in those days, just a great big concrete slab for a shelf in the pantry.
I reckon it was about 1956 (when I was 6) that we got our first 14 inch black and white telly.
Just the beeb in those days. It stood on the shelf where the old valve radio used to stand. Housewives Choice and forces favourite.
In the 80s you couldn’t buy ice cream in any other way. The most expensive stuff was in a plastic container but we could never afford that.
Same with alcohol Ralph. You could only buy it from the pub or Off Licence. Buying it cheap from the supermarkets has destroyed the old pubs…They were more than just drinking establishments, they were the life and soul of the community.
Yeah I agree, there’s just no way the pubs can compete anymore.
i remember in 48 my aunty got a prefab that had a fridge, and a bath, the fridge impressed the seven year old me more…
then my mam got a council house with metal window frames, ice about half an inch thick one the insided in the winter, we lived in a fridge…lol
Yes, I remember my auntie had the prebab - with the asbestos windows. Horrible…
asbestos walls pal, the windows were glass…ROFL…sorry.
Yes, silly me …:…
