Only have ever been in -7 C(19F) in Tasmania.
Which was cold enough. Car windscreens frozen over, water pipes frozen. Sun never breaking through the thick fog
-23 C. Couldn’t walk my dog since her paws were freezing to the ground.
The frozen lakes in Canada. It was -20C in one of the dry docks…
I call those temperatures stoopid cold. Can never imagine experiencing such temperatures.
People in Russia experience -50 C and below.
Dry docks, were you working there at that time?
Too cold to be outside in my opinion.
I know, and that is just double, no, triple stoopid.
It was down to -12 in the Cotswolds this winter .
Killed lots of my plants
Yes, on a project there. By way of contrast I had a spell in the Sahara Desert.
About -40 c, a place called Pyestock, just outside Farnborough, UK.
-40c in the UK? There’s got to be a story there.
I’ve been winter camping in the Highlands and the Lake District a few times when the temperature in the tent at night was typically -13C, -15C and on one occasion -18C
But that was years ago when I was younger & fitter
It was in a jet engine altitude test chamber. We had been running the engine at simulated subsonic high altitude at a temperature of about - 60 c, but had to shut down and enter the chamber as a result of ice build up on the intake debris guard. I scraped the ice off with an aluminium comb (I had hair back then) and carried it outside where we had a snowball fight in the + 30 c summer air.
We didn’t stay inside the cell for very long!
Test chamber with the lid off as the engine was being lowered into place. 'Twas one of these I was testing, an RB199 for the Tornado fighter - bomber.
You reminded me of when I left Tasmania, with sub zero temperatures and summers rarely getting above 32C - 90F.
My first summer in Esperance Western Australia, 11am, 47.9C, 118F.
I could not believe it could get so hot. I sat in the ocean at the beach for a couple of hours then an incredible thunderstorm passed over.
In Tasmania, the thunderstorm are predominately sheet lightning.
I had never seen forked lightning. This was so massive I had to take shelter under the jetty. My dog was shaking in terror.
How come it is so cold there? Is that a regular occurrence?
I wonder if thermal underwear is effective when temperatures get so low?
I don’t know what the temperature was…. I’ve been to the Antarctic peninsula , it was summertime but still a tad chilly.
Maximum summer temperatures can reach a scorching 10 degrees Celsius.
Down as far as -40 Celsius
I think I experienced -30 in Northern Iran but cannot remember if that was Centigrade or Fahrenheit, It was in late November or early December 1972 (if i could look at my old British Passport I could be more precise) and It was bitterly cold something for which I was fairly ill equipped. I had one really warm jacket and a not very warm sleeping bag. I was on my way to India and Nepal overland from the UK
I’ve swum in the sea without a wetsuit when the water was 10 degrees but it was scary and I wouldn’t do it again
It’s weird, you get colder when you get out and it’s really difficult to warm back up
A bit dangerous for us older ones
See my earlier post. It was in a jet engine altitude test chamber where we would simulate low speed-high altitude (very, very cold), or high-speed low altitude (very, very hot).
If we had to go into the chamber after a test run it could be a case of wearing layers of warm clothing or underpants and overalls, plus safety boots.
