What is it about old things

I’ve been into antiques and vintage things for as long as I can remember and I still can’t fully explain it to people who aren’t. The closest I get is that new things don’t have much of a story yet.

I like going through old shops and markets where nothing is organized and you have to actually look. Half the time I don’t buy anything. That part doesn’t bother me.

Curious what draws the rest of you to it. Is it specific eras, specific things, or just the general feeling of the whole business.

Old and vintage things have a sort of fascination for me, I think they have done as far back as I can remember. The different styles and colours as fashions and tastes change over the course of time.

I’ve posted this before on the forum but I used to find discarded clay tobacco pipes on The Thames Foreshore when I had a permit to do so

I’m quite keen on 70s style things/clothes too!

This is a nice old school 70s phone, it’s been converted!

It’d be an absolute pleasure to get out searching in charity shops, bric a brac, markets etc for vintage goodies this summer if possible, antique shops are a bit pricey!

I treasure old things. I admire the craftmanship of days of old, everyone’s in so much of a rush nowadays, can’t be bothered to learn the art (there is no money in it of course). I admire the quality materials used. Some may not be politically correct like Tortoiseshell or I don’t know, but beautiful all the same.

I love cameras, old and the retro. You’ve got one or two haven’t you @Chilliboot ?

Certainly have d00d!

A couple of Canon AE-1’s and a rock solid Pentax K1000
Purley analogue, monochrome film at 400 ISO +
I took a couple of them out for a spin over The Bank Holiday weekend photographing some gigs outside our wonderful local CAMRA pub!

Should have some prints back from the processor any day now from a previous roll of film, football stadium stuff!:+1:

Second pic is cool. Can we see a video, with sound, of the shutter opening/closing.

The second picture was taken with my mobile, deffo not analogue
I guess I could try and make a quick video via YouTube and post it at some point. They do have a lovely satisfying ‘clunky’ feel and sound when I press the shutters, particularly the Pentax!

I’m one of those folks who don’t go to charity shops, lawn sales, or rummaging through old boxes of stuff from old people’s attics. I’ve grown up listening to my friends and their families bemoaning the full basements and attics with 75 year old things their parents simply couldn’t part with. So, things sat in boxes and corners now left for the grandchildren to get rid of. They don’t hold the memories the grandparents had. Those feelings don’t pass through generations anymore.

My parents didn’t hold such things except for a small box of jewelry from WW II that my Dad sent to his mom at the time, and a family Bible. Thank goodness.!

I’m not a collector or a hoarder, either. Anything I haven’t used in three years goes in the Nex-T-New box for others to deal with. Only a handful of items in a small box (photos, letters from my son while in the AF, and jewelry from sweethearts of old) are worth holding on to for me. One exception is my Christmas ornaments that I have saved and used yearly since 1967. My kids (5 year old) macaroni crafts are among them.

That way, no one has to deal with my sentimental full attic or basement. Yes, and they thank me for it.

But then, that’s me.
