Lovely PK! I like canals. Where I lived for a good many years was on the Grand Union Canal. A lot of history with that.
Thank you Besoeker! I love canals too (and houseboats). Yes, I would imagine there is so much history in each canal way. The one you lived close to is huge though, I was reading it on Wikipedia.
Where we lived, Croxley Green, was near to Croxley Mill, the paper mill. Continuous paper was first manufactured by two Fourdrinier brothers not far from us. That was about 1800. I read the history of that at our local library called “:The Endless Web”. Quite interesting. As it, happens I visited a lot of paper mill projects with my business.
Apologies for my diversion…
Oh this sounds fascinating actually. Would you consider making a thread about it at some point in the future? I’d love to visit a paper mill. I went through a crafting phase of making my own paper, so I think it would be fun to read.
I’ll give it a go.
I think the first thing is perspective, the size of the beast. A paper mill drive is about 100 metres long and 7 metres wide. They are usually around 15 sections. The first is the Couch which is a fine mesh that is soaked initially until the mesh gets enough fabric to form it. The next are presses to squeeze out the fabric a bit better. Then there are the drying sections. These are progressively heated until the is dry. Sometimes there is also a Callender which a smoother finish. Then there is a final roll that moves the new rolls to their next destination.
