We have Bank Holidays here too but the only people who get them off are bank workers. NSW gets 10 public holidays a year including the King’s Birthday (second Monday in June).
Different states have different public holidays for example Victoria gets a public holiday for a footie match and another for a horse race.
Most larger companies/organisations have a “Picnic” Day where the company gives the workers a day off and usually pays for some celebration.
Holidays are legislated - four weeks a year plus an extra week for shift workers. The annoying thing is that has not changed for 60 years. Now we are apparently slowly moving to a 4 day week for the same pay as the legislated 38 hour working week provided productivity remains the same.
