Joe you should contact age concern or similar…when my aunt had her hip replaced she was given the loan of a chair similar to a bar stool but very secure and safe that was high and she used to perch on that while being in the kitchen cooking…
That’s what I was thinking, Kazz. Uncle Joe, I know how fiercely independent you are, as I am, but sometimes we all need help.
I’m concerned about you trying to cook, using two crutches because, if you do fall whilst there’s a pan boiling or something the consequences could be terrible.
Please contact Age UK (formerly Age Concern) for any advice they can give you, even if it’s just a wheeling chair for you to bomb round on in your kitchen.
Here. At least take a look.
not wanting to speak out of turn but the others are right, if you had some help just for a few weeks until your mobile again.
If you had a fall you could set your recovery back for months.
Thank you people - unfortunately my kitchen is far too small for me to have a perching stool in it - the perching stool is in my bathroom and enables me to sit and wash & shave. The OT have given me a trolley - this enables me to wheel my plate from kitchen to lounge where I sit and eat.
My mother in law was talking about an organisation that delivers meals. I believe it costs about £25 per week and you get a menu so that you can choose. Her friend uses them all the time as he has just lost his wife and is just unable to fend for himself. I wonder for just a little while this might be an option. Found this link which might be helpful. I know it ain’t home cooking but, hey just until you throw the crutches away.
http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1120881 Don’t know if you have to pay for these.
Cate darlin’ - there is another organisation, called Wiltshire Farm Foods - they deliver ready cooked, frozen meals - all that’s necessary is to re-heat them. The man from Wiltshire Farm Foods called at 09.00 this morning and deposited a box of seven ready meals and seven ‘sweets’.
Good for you Uncle Joe, my father-in-law used to use this company,a delivery every fortnight. He was always very pleased. He didn’t have a large enough fridge and they supplied one for him on loan. Don’t know if he had to pay rent for it. No washing up, fresh food and plenty of it he said.
I was also told about Wiltshire Farm Foods after I’d had my stroke but, fortunately, I wasn’t debilitated enough to take up the idea.
For tonight’s tea, I’ve had prawn madras curry with pilau rice.
Brilliant!! so glad that you are safe from the kitchen and enjoying some food without having to cook it.
Went into Thorntons Cafe today. We had chocolate cake, hot chocolate and a free chocolate. Grandaughter had a lumpy fruit drink (forgotten what it was called) she hated it, I loved it but had no room. So, I tipped a small bottle of lemonade I had in my bag into my husbands empty teapot and poured it in that to bring home. Was like the madhatters tea party!
I hope you enjoy your Wiltshire meals Uncle Joe - I believe they provide an efficient service with a good variety of dishes to choose from. We felt we could always recommend Wiltshire to folks who were wanting to enjoy nutritious meals without the hassle and effort of having to prepare and cook from scratch. ![]()
Is that the Thorntons Chocolates Cafe, Mary? If so I didn’t even know they had cafes  I wish there was one here!![]()
Yes it is Mags. I didn’t know they had a cafe either until today. Our shop in Poole just sells chocolates. This is in Castle Point in Bournemouth. There was a family on the next table to us. Very bravely they let their under 2 year old tackle a guey chocolate cake. She was covered and I smiled as I remembered little Hannah (another thread).
That sounds my type of place!
I’ll also be thinking of baby Hannah every time I see little ones in cafes now!
No you don’t
When are you starting your ‘diet’? I’m starting next week because I have too much to eat up before then. ![]()
I’m currently munching a Terry’s chocolate orange!
I also have too much naughty food to use up so it looks like I won’t be starting until the week after.![]()
Oh, ok then
If you’re really serious, shall we compare weight losses? I believe I saw a thread here some time back on this subject. ![]()
I’ll let you know when I get up the willpower to start!

It sounds lovely a Thorntons Chocolates Cafe i would be there all the time
thats just reminded me i have a box of there rum truffles still unopened.
It was lovely in there, little wooden tables and chairs in the window and others further down, one long wall selling all their boxes of chocs, the cups were massive and the chocolate sprinkles on top were huge flakes not that powdered stuff and a free chocolate for everyone. The best of all was the smell of their chocolate on entering. The three of us stood there for a moment breathing it all in.
