I think in the case of genocide it’s a bit more than political.

Olympic Games 1936?

I agree with Helen, a genocide is not ā€˜politics’.

May I ask if Israel’s musical performers are culpable for the purported genocide?

In any case, the usual way of expressing displeasure for a country partaking in the song contest is to award it zero points.

I do find myself wondering why Israel are being treated differently to Russia.

HI

we are actively helping Ukraine fight Russia, not sitting on our hands saying oh dear as tens of thousands of civilians are being killed and their homes destroyed.

Since my view on Israel/Gaza is no doubt at odds with the acceptable prevailing view of the majority of the membership of this forum, I shall respectfully ā€œnot go thereā€ as it’d be futile to do so.

On the subject of the Eurovision Song Contest, it seems increasingly obvious to me that a whole load of time, money and effort could be saved if they didn’t actually bother to have anyone sing, and instead went straight to the voting process.

the Eurovision song contest has always been rigged with certain countries ganging up to support one compeditor. So I hvn’t bothered to watch or care about it for many years

Probably not, but when there’s a cruel regime sanctions are a useful tool to defeat it, e.g. South Africa

I’m yet to be convinced that boycotting a song contest will play any part in a regime change :man_shrugging:t2:

Last night, at a recital I went to, the grand piano used was a Steinway. Ought I to have walked out in protest, or perhaps run up before he started to play and drape a certain flag over it?

That looks like you are confusing names of Jewish origin with the actions of the Israeli government and armed forces … and some so called settlers. Why would you make that mistake? After all, Netanyahu was born Benzion Mileikowsky in Poland. Are you therefore going to demonstrate against anyone Polish?

I take your point. It seems that several countries can’t make the same distinction between what is supposed to be a music/art competition of sorts, and the actions of the gov/armed forces.

As for Polish, since I am half Polish myself, I shall desist from self flagellation at this time.

I totally agree with with Dex on this one.
It has nothing to do with the artists or the songwriters, they were probably from the UK anyway.
Far better to have accepted them and given them nil points.
Are we to be held ransom by the EU countries who ban anyone they don’t like.
So Israel and Russia, the only people you are hurting by silly sanctions is Joe public and at the end of the day nothing ever comes from sanctions.
It’s also a mute point about Israel’s reaction to Hamas kidnapping, torturing and murdering a couple of hundred concert goers who were only out to enjoy music.
I would like to think that our government would act in the same way should it have happened to my family, friends and countrymen and women.
Tukey had the right idea when they could see what the contest was turning into…

Turkey

Okay…I’ll get my coat!

It is indeed an irony that countries are boycotting a music festival/comp. If Hamas had done the same in the first place, then maybe this whole tragic saga might not have happened. :man_shrugging:t2:

Please note that I’m not against the wishes of the Palestinian population to have its own independent state, but cannot for a second condone the actions of Hamas then, nor since.
