Warning UK set for five years of lost economic growth

I think those who live well beyond the commuter lines into London might be choking with laughter at the notion that West Sussex is some poor backwater of the UK. Lovely countryside no doubt but you are in a very wealthy part of the country that benefits directly from its proximity to London. I’m pretty sure the beeb article that was shared did not have wealthy West Sussex in mind when it wrote “other regions”.

I should hope not! I like to enjoy the supreme exclusivity of my part of England :point_right::grin::clap: Gotta keep the riffraff out :+1:

Living near London means a higher cost of living. For instance, our Council Tax in Surrey Heath (London commuter belt) is double the amount paid in some other parts of the country. There may less money around in the North but the cost of living is lower. I speak from experience. Wealth is probably relative to where one lives, although there is some poverty around here too.

I remember our first stays in South Yorkshire with friends we’d made on holiday in Jersey. Everyone thought we’d have loads of money coming from the South. I used to tell them more is needed for where we live.

When those friends came to stay with us they were amazed how much more expensive some items, including food, were in our neck of the woods. One memorable occasion was a trip to Windsor Castle. They had to take a photo of the Fish ‘n’ Chips menu there because the folks back home would never have believed it.

My part of West Sussex places my council tax F at £3,056.43 for this year up to April and I’m nowhere near London.

Here in South Yorkshire I pay about half of yours LongDriver…£1496.85 this year. I am in Band ‘B’ though…

Because I have extended and then 3 yrs later, extended again on a property that was already substantial, so I have to pay more as they upgraded my D to an F after the council rating dept was informed from the building dept …nosey barkers🤬

I suspect that if you started a thread “who can make sense of council tax?” then it would run and run. The whole system needs reviewing.
