Mind you Pauline, whilst I can see you would be angry/humiliated/embarrassed at the bus driver ticking you off … I’d probably have just taken it on the chin myself no matter how peeved I felt as basically, I’d know I had put myself at a disadvantage and in the wrong in the first place for leaving my dog alone, untended, vulnerable to any dogsnatcher.
I trust Jack didn’t suffer any social anxiety or mental stress at witnessing the altercation. Give him a hug from me. … and have one yourself.
In hindsight i should have asked a passenger to just keep an eye on him, it all worked out in the end…my son is dealing with it, he looked at it differently to you Morti…
Thanks for both the hugs, one back at ya…
Edit to add we all see things differently, …it’s when we force our opinions onto others is when the problems arise,
Some of us do that from time to time, I know I have with my son…not now, because he puts me in my place, plus I shouldn’t be doing it anyway.
Wouldn’t have been a problem here, you can’t take animals on public transport unless they are in a cage or suitable container. (except guide dogs) Basically you never see animals on buses, trains or inside shops
Hi Pauline interesting to read about your experiences here. Unrelated really but I once knew Newbury well and lived in B/stoke on and off for almost 20 years. It was indeed a different B/stoke in those days I even remember the bus terminal being first built. My last visit was in 2000 it then felt very strange and I had heard descriptions of “chave city” etc. Mind I am no sure if most people wouldn’t’ give a sh… about a dog tied to a fence in the bus shelter - I would just assume that the owner would be back soon??
the bus driver sounds a bit obnoxious to me and anyway my days in B/stoke was amongst Hampshire people who were slow and thoughtful - nowadays it is classified as a suburb of London! - I do hope Newbury is not the same? and of course the rest of Hants too?
I have been travelling once a fortnight to Newbury to visit my son, first bus takes me to Basingstoke bus depot, then the next bus from the depot straight to Newbury, I went and had a coffee at the outside street food cafe, the staff are dog friendly and said they will watch Jack, if I need to go to the toilet, I explained to them what had happened, so was well pleased with that, Newbury is a busy bustling town, nothing like London, lots of friendly folk about, there are a lot of coffee bars down the main town, that’s closed off to cars at around 9am I believe, I just have to watch out for cyclists.
That’s a sore subject at the moment, my son was going to buy me a car, but it’s had to go on hold…to be honest,I love catching the bus, I have met some really nice and interesting people over the weeks, I am very much a people person.
I don’t think I will be saying that come winter, brrrr, waiting at the bus stop.
Yes,I must do that, but you know what it’s like, when you gotta go, you can’t hold it in…
I have been caught out so many times, luckily I have found different places to spend a penny, even number 2 sometimes, I walk everywhere or catch a bus, I might get the train, at least they have a toilet, problem is,it’s probably closed, like Greggs at Basingstoke bus depot.such a pain…
I was reading an article somewhere on the web about how all the great and glorious outside toilets often with attendants have all closed down many for ever - it’s almost like it is now a bygone thing of a bygone era - I speak of UK mainly cannot speak for the rest of the world? I remember arriving in B/stoke 57 years ago and after the train from London catching a local to Kingsclere or beyond and being put off just outside of town to walk through an ancient spinny to the big hospital on the hill and there my life started for the third time!!
A man walks down the street
It’s a street in a strange world
Maybe it’s the third world
Maybe it’s his first time around
Doesn’t speak the language
He holds no currency
He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound, the sound
Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says, “Amen and Hallelujah!”
YEA!! that was B/stoke 57 years ago!! - they had their wednesday arvo cattle market when the pubs stayed open later for the farmers - the hampshire ‘hogs’ accent was rather strange
I think I need that sort of thing to sooth me atm - I have two remaining mates in B/stoke - and keep in touch by phone and internet but would love to get back there just for the nostalgia of it all!!
It’s a great place gumbud, I met a new friend today called Marianne, she was telling me she had been homeless since the age of 8, but has been in shared accommodation for a number of years now, this is the street food cafe, just up from the bus depot, I did ask the guy if I could take a picture of him and post it ,he said yes, this is where I get my latte, that I’m addicted to…I’ve met some lovely people on my travels…
Each time I visit there are different staff at the street food cafe, there must be at least four different cafes in that area.
I may leave later in the day, to catch the bus, as of yet I’ve left my sons house to early, arrived In Basingstoke around 10 30 am, the street food isn’t ready until 11.30 am, it smells so good, I would love to taste it.
