They wouldn’t have been if we hadn’t priced ourselves out of the market so no money was put into development. If truths known, most of the designs of future vehicles was done by British engineers same as has happened now with Rolls Royce, mini’s and Jaguar etc…

All cars were rustbuckets then Annie, but manufacturers in other countries progressed with car efficiency and the unions here just pushed for higher wages until it killed the industry.

Some folks are basket cases but that does not undermine their worth.
Listen my first car was a maestro. I was devastated when I had to scrap it. Really nippy on the motorway and lovely inside. But nothing could stop the rot.

their loss was my gain. I luckily had an S series engine - but the only time I experienced power steering was when it snowed. I hadn’t realised it was a nationalised company. what a mess

Anyway it is not really the topic TARIFFS is the topic.
As @swimfeeders pointed out it is too early to tell the long term effect but a US recession is in the offing and that will affect the world in the same way that a turn down in China will affect us.
These tariffs won’t have a big instant effect on this country except for a few small businesses like fashion but who knows what the future brings?

From what I can gather Trump is imposing a 20% tariff on poor little us.

If we buy anything from America we put on VAT at 20%

He has put a 25% on cars and car spares from the UK, we have had the minimum Tariff of an extra 10% put on everything else we export to them, making a total of 20%.
Trump considers VAT to be a Tariff on American Goods.
In simple terms we have been treated the same as North Korea.
Any thing which crosses the Border in NI is going to get very complicated if it ends up in the USA.
That is true but even local producers pay the 20% so imports are not discriminated against.
It is the same here Trump claims that the 10% GST is an import tariff, it is not, local producer pay the 10% too.
Trump has no idea about economics he will drive the world into recession.
I’m not sure you’ve fully grasped the difference between universal value added tax and import targeted tariff taxes.
