I suppose Trump and his lackies think there is logic to their way of thinking. For decades the US has spent more on defense and military than any other country. They have created the largest, the best equipped and the most lethal fighting force. As the US has pretty much no reason to expect invasion this is a military designed for projecting force and might overseas. So the logic goes - why on earth are we not doing stuff that helps us & our country with all this military superiority? And when we say “do stuff” we actually mean “do anything we like, to whom ever we like”.

Exactly. When you build a force designed to project power globally, it’s hardly surprising that some start thinking it should be used whenever convenient.
Like a hostile business takeover of countries rather than boardrooms. He’s as ruthless ( and heartless) as a Mafia Don

He is taking personnel out of the USA Airbase in Qatar, there are around 10,000 there.
It would be used in any attack on Iran.
Iran retaliated by attacking the base after Trump bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Iran has around 2000 surface to surface missiles it can use.
Qatar is somewhat worried.

I’m the same as you. The more I read, the more stressed I get, and the more I start to hate him, especially when he keeps trying to interfere with my country. It’s happened more than once.
In the end, I sat back and realized I’m not a national leader. I can’t change any of this. And all that anger and resentment I carry? It only burns me, not them.
I just hope that in the end, karma catches up with people like that.

These things usually blow over in time Pimmy, and all the worrying in the world won’t change that.
You have to think that, we are all of an age on the forum, and do we want to spend the rest of the valuable time we have left wringing our hands and being angry all the time…
Sometimes it pays to be selfish and think of ourselves, because as sure as eggs is eggs, no one else will…

I think it safe to say that most reasonably minded people wish that Trump’s aggressive actions (at home and abroad) will blow over and soon be forgotten. The worry is that so much of what he is doing is aimed at a seismic shift that will not blow over, fade or revert back. This is true within the US where he has created a free roaming military force without rules or checks that are terrorising civilians, and worse. Internationally he is leveraging US military might and economic strength to try to force other countries into accepting outcomes not in their interest, not in global interests and without respect for long established international laws. None of that lends itself to peace, prosperity and respect for each other. And that almost certainly will lead to more conflict.
So I would think there is good reason to worry as all this will impact each of us, in some way, and none of it positive.

So the orange bully is going to hike tariffs on European countries because they have said that Greenland is not for sale. What exactly will the response be from UK and EU?
I’ve been impressed by Canada’s swift preparations for adjusting to life with the bully Trump causing chaos. They’ve signed a trade deal with China. They re-routed grain supplies to go directly to Canada ports rather than via the US. They are doing their purchasing anywhere other than the US. They have pretty much stopped all tourism to the US. Essentially they have taken steps to make any future Trump tariff or trade threat completely duff and ineffectual.
Will the EU / UK do the same? I hope so.

I think Canada has a far better Prime Minister than we do. Carney was pretty stable as our Governor of the Bank of England so he’s ideal as a PM having to deal with financial and trade leverage/blackmail/shennanigans.
The EU response so far looks encouraging but Trump seems pretty confident they’ll ‘come around’ … grr, the arrogance of the man.

I haven’t watched the clips but he is really alienating everyone now, (apart from countries that are the enemies of democracy and freedom who are cheering him on). It’s astonishing and a very worrying development. It must be a real stress for Canada too. There was a question on the radio the other day - why are Republican senators backing this?

Well they do have a lot of investment in the US. I’m not sure how easy it is to move it elsewhere or which countries could provide the same level of return. He’s set up trade agreements for increased investment to keep countries tied to the US. On the other side we have Putin and China waiting for an opportunity. It really isn’t a good time for the world. Nowhere seems safe from grasping and unfriendly hands.
