Update on Holly

She and her set up sound wonderful!

Jazzi  some groomers use cage dryers and there have been some dreadful accidents and deaths over the years :frowning: When left unattended the dogs can overheat and canā€™t escape .
Something to bear in mind when you look for a groomer for Holly.

I would never allow my dogs to go in a cage drier but then no one trims my dogs only me .

Iā€™ll bear this in mind, and maybe ask around on local FB pages. There is nothing like asking regular users of these places.

Holly is so lovely, Jazzi !

Thank you ST, I think so too! Heh heh.

Clumsy, that is horrendous. Iā€™d have been livid if I caught anyone treating mine like that!

Megā€™s right Jazzi. If you do take Holly anywhere else for grooming, check their drying methods before you book her in.
Itā€™s what I meant a few posts back, but I call them cabinet dryers.
Like I said, it is careless and negligent if a dog gets burnt, and could Holly off being groomed the next time.

Believe me Mups, Mr Clumsy was more than livid and evidently had a right go at the stupid girl who was trying to dry her. Anna apologised, but that really wasnā€™t good enough. The excuse was ā€œit was the first time the girl had been allowed to dry a dogā€. ChoCho was just a baby then and she was really traumatised. We have never taken her there again, and never will. We know people who do take their dogs there and we know there are still complaints. The trouble is, I think, Anna herself is money motivated, she also has two small children now and itā€™s other people who are doing the grooming.

Very recently one of our neighbours, who has two small dogs, asked where we took ChoCho because one of their dogs had been bitten by another dog whilst waiting in the queue. Anna had evidently taken Rosa, the little dog, to her husbandā€™s surgery to have the bite checked. Mary, the neighbour, was told this when she went to pick up the dogs. However she and her husband were not at all happy about the bite, which was on the back of Rosaā€™s neck, and took her to another Vet who put two stitches in the bite. Rosa wonā€™t be going there again.

I wouldnā€™t take ChoCho anywhere where they have dogs queued up to be dealt with. We have an appointment time to take her and we are told what time we can pick her up again, usually around an hour and a half later. Fingers crossed ChoCho has always been well treated, not stressed and looks lovely when we collect her.

It is quite impressive Jazzi. It was a pet shop originally when the boulevard first opened. Last year the pet shop closed and a couple of months later reopened by a new company. No pets sold there, but they do have a catalogue of pets for adoption from various rescue centres. Other than that itā€™s all pet foods, toys, leads, car harnesses, etc etc. The back half of the shop has been refurbished as the grooming centre. The grooming woman has her certificates on the wall, just like the Vets and the bathing area and drying room is quite impressive. I was also asked if ChoCho had any allergic reactions to shampoos, was she prone to snapping or biting and did I want her cut by machine (electric clipper things presumably) or scissors.

So up to now ChoChoā€™s visits there have been a success, she is booked in on Wednesday for a trim, bath etc. Prices are charged by size of dog, the full works for ChoCho is 13 euros, which amazed me. We thought we were doing well at 21 euros ! You can also take your dog just for a bath, prices for that start at 3.75 euros. However, just a bath I can manage, but no way would I ever be confident enough to give her a hair cut. Iā€™d be terrified of taking hair off her face, especially around her eyes.

Blimey Lorettaā€¦what fantastic prices! At my vet, where there is a salon, the first price is just for a wash, and is Ā£15.

I was willing to pay that but as it turned out had to do her myself.

Jazzing I think the muzzle idea is a good one but donā€™t get one of the fabric ones that restrict her mouth from opening at all as they also restrict breathing when a dog is hot or excited. The plastic ones that are like a colander are better. Pippa is a devil for eating acorns if she can get to them which are poisonous to dogs so in the autumn on goes the muzzle. The first one we got was just a little bit too big and she just put her foot up under her chin and pushed it off. The pet shop were happy to change it though and helped to get the right fit as well. Normally Pipa wouldnā€™t have let anyone do that but we were by the boxes of treats and she was distracted by all the nice doggy smells.

We have to put our dogs in the sink virtually every time we come back from a walk in winter just to clean their pads off if nothing else, but we quite enjoy grooming and clipping them generally.

Small dogs such as ours are very easy to groom and clip, we treated ourselves to some decent Andis clippers six years ago which are still going strong and we just pop them up on the table every four or five weeks for a light all over clip and tidy up around the face with scissors. We figure over the last six years we have saved over three grand in grooming fees, the dogs really donā€™t mind it and they got used to it very quickly.

Anyway, it works for usā€¦

Too right, clumsy. I didnā€™t even know people did queue up for a groomer! The groomers I know give you an appointment time, like any hairdrersser does.
That sounds like one of those ā€˜chain storeā€™ groomers to me.

Barry, can I ask, how long do you reckon a blade lasts you?
Do you send it for re-sharpening, or just replace it?

We replaced the blade just recently after six years thinking it must be ready, but Iā€™m not sure it was necessary as it doesnā€™t really seem noticeably any different.

Thanks Barry.

The grooming part of our Vetā€™s here charge 25 euros for the full deal, small dogs that is. Iā€™ve never looked what they charge just for a bath. Iā€™ll have to have a look now.

The Vets we use is also part of a chain, very similar to Pets at Home, but here itā€™s Pets world. Grooming there is also by appointment and I hear they are good, they charge 25 euros for small dogs, full works. The Vets are absolutely superb, never heard a bad word about any of them. The only Vet in the two Pets Worlds near us, you would need a ā€œgeneralā€ appointment for is Augustino, the boss Vet, heā€™s so popular he has to work on an appointment system, otherwise heā€™d be working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, he really is a lovely man and wonderful with the animals. Weā€™ve seen him calm down a snarling aggressive dog in seconds. No idea how he does it, but heā€™s a very calm and quiet man who has a true talent with animals.

Itā€™s good if you can do it yourself Barry, Iā€™m not so confident and I think ChoCho knows it. I sometimes manage to cut off some of the hair on top of her head, which drops over her eyes as it grows, but she wriggles and squeals before Iā€™ve even got the scissors near her. I wouldnā€™t even attempt to try anything near her eyes, Iā€™d never forgive myself if anything went wrong. The last groomer, and the present one, always tell me sheā€™s so good and never a minuteā€™s trouble, so I think ChoCho has more confidence in them than she has in me. I think Iā€™ll stick with the groomers.

I need to smarten Holly up, and Iā€™d like to get some fur clipped from her bum, as she doesnā€™t like me cleaning her.

I bought a set of rechargable clippers, including scissors, off a local FB group, from just up the road. They are virtually silent so hope to try her out myself at some stage. I too hope to save on grooming fees.

My vet sells thinning scissors for about Ā£7, which I donā€™t have.

And on their website, on the grooming section, they state that customers can use their bath to clean off dirty dogs, for Ā£6.50, including shampoo and dryer, and will lend a towel and apron for Ā£1 deposit. Wonder how many people know about it? Iā€™ve seen it, just inside the entrance.
