Two child benefit cap

Two child benefit cap .
Should it be scrapped ?

IMO it should stop after the 1st 2, or there is an undertow of encouragement to carry on breeding. Now that said, I have 3 of my own and brought up 4, but that was well over 50+ yrs ago

I think Child Benefit is a bit of an old fashioned thing nowadays

In Days of Yore it was usually paid to the mother in the family and was often the only money the woman had control of, if the husband was the breadwinner

I well remember going to the post office with my little yellow book and being scrupulous about making sure it was spent on the child it was intended for

But does that happen nowadays, isn’t it a straight in the bank account job and just adds to the general coffers?

And it’s a universal benefit, so wealthy parents get it too. Boris Johnson and Prince William collecting it?

I really think it would be better to give a tax allowance for each child, which would let people keep more of what they earn to pay for their children

And then more working tax credit allocated for claimants at the lower end of the pay scale

And yes, I think both the tax allowance and the tax credits should only apply to the first two children

If you earn more that 50k pa there is some tax implication .

I also agree it should stop after the second child . Why anyone would want more than 2 children is beyond me . Surely you can give 2 children such a better upbringing rather than having more and more . It might make people actually think about not having more .

Just an add on . I was waiting at the bus stop , a young single mum arrives with 2 small children , tells me she’s in temporary accommodation and been in bed and breakfast hotel for a long while . No partner around . She’s visiting mum as she does each day , she’s hoping for a brand new house that’s being built on a large estate near me , she tells me she’s hoping to have another baby too , once she’s got the house. She’s got her life organised , new house , benefits for the next 20 odd years and no doubt the kids will grow up having kids on benefits.

Why anyone who fathers a child is not obliged to support it I don’t know .

This is a huge problem these days as I see it! Far too much feeling of self entitlement🤬. I’m sorry young lady, but get off your arse, find the father(s) and then tell the authorities so they can peruse the lazy gits for full support. Any fertile male can sire a child, but it takes a real man of responsibilities to rear a child alongside the mother. Oh, wait a minute, isn’t that called marriage:point_right::sparkling_heart::grin:

I’d have all absentee fathers found, then publicly flogged & shamed before raiding their accounts🤬

I seem to remember that when my sons were born in the early 70s that child allowance, as it was called then, was not paid out for the first child, only the second. Only having two children I don’t know whether it was paid for subsequent children after the second though I imagine it probably was. I can’t remember the exact amount that was paid in those days.

When my twins were born in 1973, I received child allowance for the first born only. I think it was £1 in those days.
I believe it was 1974 when they brought in the allowance for two children.

I used the family allowance as it was back then for all sorts of things !
The same with the winter fuel allowance.
I tend to think it should be paid those in greatness need only.

I think those who have children, regardless of what their earnings are should get family allowance.
Why should they be punished for earning a good wage, those that do pay a whole lot more in taxes.
And yes,i think the Two child cap is a good idea.
