Trapped nerve in spine

That’s fantastic Dianne. I am pleased for you.

I am hoping mine won’t come to surgery…

I’m sorry to hear that you have a nerve issue. It must be painful and I know how active you are as well so I hope you get better soon

Yes that is the best the Doctor can do because like ours here they are General but we can forget that… when my Doctor thinks I expect too much of his knowledge he will remind me…
That is what specialist’s are trained for and so we we get sent to the Specialist when he thinks that is necessary…
OK to be fair, Husband has a lot of appointments to get through this month, it is a tad tense but prevention is better than cure…

…Trapped nerve is a classic symptom of a bulging disk Carol and Doctors often give 6 weeks for self repair.
…in my case 1 year of hell, a body reliant on pain relievers, which I can no longer stomach except Paracetamol, damaged liver, temporary as the liver will heal …and after Surgery a whole year of depression.
… Pain free and was happy for about 2 days after the successful back surgery. The depression was caused by drug withdrawal

That is why I say make sure it is not left for long without an MRI scan…

I had a ‘bulging disc’ which caused excruciating pain and I had a year or so of pointless physio, chiro, acupuncture etc. Finally changed consultant and he asked why nobody had done an MRI, and discovered a lipoma in there which he then surgically removed! Not a bulging disc at all. So I kind of agree with the previous mri comment but finding the right consultant is also key.

I have been x-rayed & have several bulging discs. I don’t doubt this diagnosis.
It was bad news for you though. I’m glad they found the cause in the end.

It’s early days for me & if I still have this problem in a month the doctor did suggest sending me for a scan…

One of the medicines the dr gave me was Zapain which helped .

You have my sympathies Carol, my dear departed Sister also had a bulging disc which caused dreadful pain down her bottom and leg, she had sciatica and I saw her suffering terribly.

I hope it untraps itself, nerve pain is so awful.

Hugs for you xxxx

May I second that after seeing my mum suffer the same for most of her life.

Thanks for the advice & sympathy everybody.

Water exercise is supposed to be good for lots of ailments, so tomorrow I’m going to attempt a very slow & gentle swim. Once I manage to get in the water I might be alright. I feel it’s worth a try…

The doctor did give me the impression it would settle down in a few weeks so I look forward to that. :slightly_smiling_face:

I hope that helps Carol, during lockdown I had a terrific load of pain in my lower back and my leg, it got so bad I didn’t know if I was coming or going. All the doctor would do was give me different pain killers, none of them worked.
I ended up in desperation at the Chiropractor who told me something was pressing on my Sciatic Nerve and even after one session with him I felt so much better.
It took a few sessions before I was ok again and I now go to him every 6 weeks for a spine examination and I am happy to do it. I never want that pain again.
Good Luck I hope the swimming will help.

@carol, yes l had it some years ago, and had several physio visits, but nothing
helped until a tree fell on my other foot and disabled me for about a month !!
But it cured my sciatica immediately !!:grin:
Donkey man! :thinking::thinking:

I don’t think the medical profession would recommend that treatment though.

I had a few sudden ‘disk’ issues over many years and I had visited a few different Osteopaths.
All had managed to relieve my pain, until the last episode.
I can recall easily one occasion it was a Sunday and I had bent down and my back just went…the pain was horrific and I searched for a Osteopath that was open Sundays…found one in South Croydon which was just a short car journey for me. We was a huge Guy and soon found the treatment to be like a torture…the way he manipulated my spine…I walked out of there pain free…

@Psmith , No l don’t expect so :hugs:, they also put me on a rack and stretched
me, and suggested l hang down by my feet from the top of a door
occsionally??
None of which helped!!
Maybe the shock of having my other foot crushed caused my muscles to
Spasm and released the trapped nerve ??
Donkey man! :thinking::thinking:

@carol I hope that you feel better soon. In my early 20s I had it and i went to see the dr.she gave me some tablets didn’t work so I asked to see someone, had to wait 3 months. Saw a osteopath and recommended heat treatment and traction. Had 12 sessions it did get worse at first like they said but then it got better and for about 10 years I was fine. Then over time it started to get a bit worse. About 20 years ago saw a chiropractor and it worked but have to be careful who to see because each one does it differently. Still have to be careful what i do but I can manage it at the moment.

@carol How are you getting on has it eased at all?

Hi Kazz - thanks for asking.

This last week I have noticed an improvement. The tingling clamp type pain that starts in my buttock & goes all the way down my leg doesn’t happen so often and I can walk better.

I’d say it was 50% better than it was at the start.

I’m looking forward to joining my activity classes & my walking group. I haven’t been to any of them for six weeks & it’s depressed me a bit.

I shall carry on with the exercises & hope to get better still…

I really feel for you and as a sufferer with piriformis syndrome, that buttock pain going down a leg (mine is the right side) followed by a numbness is something I’ve found only certain exercises followed by rest will help alleviate. Sometimes I wish I was dog so Noel Fitzpatrick could fix my problem, but being human, some surgeries are not yet available to us.

After falling a smallboat lurched and I fell over I must have trapped a nerve that went from hip and down a leg. Walking was eased with oilment rubbed in and this lasted for a couple of years or more. Suddenly i don’t know how but the nerve became untrapped and now ok apart for the occassional twinge around the hip area
