It is quite similar but in many places in Britain, to take the biscuit is a very common saying.
To take the cake sounds very reminiscent of “let them eat cake” which of course comes from the 17th century’s “qu’ils mangent de la brioche” - which Marie Antoinette probably never said.
Yes, it’s an American expression I always found nonsensical. It’s also one of the reasons I look up Etymology of words and phrases. I’m always curious about nonsensical words and phrases such as “Raining cats and dogs!” my favorite flavor of American stupidity is what they call Gentleman’s Clubs.

You probably won’t find this written anywhere about “taking the biscuit” but I have a very strong suspicion that the popularity of that phrase in British English came about as a polite alternative to “taking the p…” or, as is said in another maybe more-polite manner, “extracting the urine” which is also used here.
My favorite British saying is very descriptive and at the same time funny. That’s when a drunk “falls off the pavement.” great expression.

TIL… That there is an organisation up here called The Witches of Scotland who it seems want an apology from the Scottish Government for the 2500 alleged witches in Scotland who are believed to have been executed, tortured, strangled and burned at the stake between the 16th and 18th centuries so around 300 years ago.
