We had a Pantry with a door and inside would be stores of home made cakes and spare tins and guess lots more…it had a little window that led to the back of the house…so my Sister and I would squeeze through the little window and pinch some cakes…thinking now we could have made it easy and gone sneaking through the door via the Kitchen.was going to get told off anyway.
In the pantry was a fridge like box that you poured a small amount of water through the top to cool it…that was our first ‘‘fridge’’
A typical cast iron smoothing iron which Nan always heated on the old stove top.
That’s impressive.Would someone have to black- lead that every day?
I’ve got one of those! It’s used as a door stop
We have too.My BH likes that sort of thing.
What could not be boil washed had to be washed cooler in a wash tub and agitated with the wooden dolly.
So that’s a wooden dolly!!
I’ve got one of those as well!!
I bath my dogs in it!
Yes and I’m 78, not 178, so in relative terms it was not that long ago
And if you had a big family, the last one in was…not that clean when they came out
Hence the old saying, don’t throw the baby out with the bath water
I’ve learnt something new today
Thanks LD!

Before and after the gas fridge we had a pantry that you walk in with a stone shelf.
We lived in a council house and would have had a coal bunker.
Wow! Who had the task of black leading all that??
Apologies
A coal fire to do the toast by, I would sit there for ages doing the toast it was so much nicer.
And roasting chestnuts on a shovel??!!
