Just been over for an hour’s work. Digging, hoeing and weeding. Hoping my fruit and veg grow as well as the weeds, lol. Meant to sprinkle some carrot seeds in amongst the onions as I used the how in between the rows, but forgot the packet. Another day, then.
Got my trousers, blouse and fleece in the wash, plus other bits, after a shower, and am hoping there will be enough sun for me to dry most of it.
Went out yesterday to do some weeding to discover that the pigeons have eaten all of the cabbage tops and pulled out some of the lettuce seedlings, grrr, now where did I put that gun…
Oh, and it looks like I’ve got aphids in the fruit garden already, so out with the sprayer later…
Hit a bit of a wet spell over the last week or so but the temperatures are holding up. This means the planting all seems to have taken. It also means the weeds are thriving.
Top photo is the main plot - from foreground: courgettes, aubergines, x15 tomatoes, peas, beetroot, couple of cornichon plants, x50 potatoes, chard
Next photo - second plot - x25 butternut suash, x50 potatoes.
And you should see how much fruit is on my trees - cheery, apple, plum, quince. Maybe even figs.
Ta. The afternoon clearing the weeds, digging over and then digging in mulch for the butternut was tiring. But the more you do then the easier it gets. And I’m hoping for many kilos of veg this year. I’ll need to clear my chest freezer of the boar and venison currently filling it (cook them, that is) - its a sacrifice I’m willing to make.
I’ve found something intriguing happening in the raised beds that I have not bothered to plant with veg this year. Every single bed has several potato plants growing from last year’s “lost” potatoes. This is despite digging what I thought were all potatoes last autumn. I have not bothered with planting them this year as focusing on tomatoes and cucumbers on the extension roof, but instead sowed lots of wildflowers and planted some begonias thinking I will have more success with lovely flowerbeds for bees/butterflies. But very amused to see some strong potato growth despite my not having lifted a finger!
Sounds like you’ve had a good morning Jan and I look forward to seeing your photos.
My plot is having the usual ups and downs but generally doing OK. One silly thing that I did was accidentally taking the growing tip out of one of my tomato plants yesterday when trying to remove just a side shoot, but luckily I had another neglected seedling which I had intended to throw away so managed to replace the damaged one…
Yes, been quite productive. Because a third had been covered by tarp, a lot of the weeds were then easy to remove. Loving using the hoe! Very effective.
Can’t tell though if my carrots are germinating. Sprinkled the seeds between the onion rows but there are now too many weeds. Maybe they are choking the growth.
Also I think I have legacy potatoes growing, so I shall leave them and put my ones close by. They have been in the back bedroom to chit.
Now I’ve heard (from a reliable source) that my NfH are staying next door (the man and his two girls will move in permanently after their September wedding), I must try and get my shed, so I have a safe place to escape to. I might pay someone to get the ground ready, then try and order one. Get a commode and then take Holly take down for the day,
Now I’m here in the front room all I can hear is them opening that front door. Constantly. And he has the nerve to comment on the amount of times I take the dog for her walk.
I do feel for you Jan, if only you could choose your neighbours, what a nicer world it would be…
Couple of photos here…
The raised beds are starting to green up now but the weeds are a pain in the butt. Not all weeds of course as many of the interlopers are actually seeds left in the home made compost that I use, but still a weed if it’s a plant in the wrong place I guess…
Hmm, the picture you sent me was good, but the links above still send a form requesting access as far as I can tell…
However, nice to see a photo of your plot but you’ve certainly got some work on by the looks of it! Amazing how much earth those raised beds take isn’t it, definitely not for the faint hearted…
