Caretakers and janitors both maintain building cleanliness, safety, and security, often functioning as similar roles. A caretake tends to have broader responsibilities, including minor repairs, security checks, and facility management, while a janitor (common in US/Scotland) focuses primarily on cleaning floors, restrooms, and waste disposal.
Keep on googling, but nobody who is British uses the term Janitor to describe a caretaker. But you may call Mr T a janitor if you so wish!
So you are an expert on building maintenance and surveying as well. Did you oversee all Council, Police, Courts, Prisons and NHS property, including Mental Health. Schools, Colleges, Fire Stations, RAF Stations etc etc As I know somebody quite close who did.

I have indeed worked in schools where there was a janitor in England so don’t think it’s exclusive to the US.

Well … I was a cleaner for a living…and I never ever used the term janitor. It’s caretaker. I scrubbed bogs … mopped floors … but never met a janitor.
British people just don’t say it. It is not the common usage norm.
