The Toms are in

I see life  . . a few of em have appeared, . . . time to get that greenhouse up methinks, . . . I wonder if taking to them like charlie does would bring them on quicker.

Woo hoo, my tomato seedlings are showing their first true leaves! Planted on March 17th. I move them from the South to West windows daily for maximum sun.

Just a few more waiting to germinate,I just had to buy some San Marzano and Principe Borghese for soup/paste etc.

I said I was going to cut back this year but already have over 200 young uns potted up,I just need a few folk to buy them later on

Never put off 'till tomorrow what you can do today, . . . . . the greenhouse construction is on hold 'till the rain goes off, . . I should’ve built it at the weekend.

My SIL is growing Gardeners Delight this year and has promised me a few plants later … here’s hoping they will be tasty!

Never put off 'till tomorrow what you can do today, . .

Do it today and if you like it you can do it again tomorrow-but forget the best chat up line I ever had(many years ago).

With age goes other things and a greenhouse is one of them. Get it built and have an erection you can be proud of

I shall fly the Saltire from it OG.

Drat, . . double drat, . . triple drat, . . I was getting on great with the construction, . . . . . then the rain came down, . . . I noticed Brandykins had mentioned this morning she had a shower or two, she lives 35 miles to the west of me and it’s been a westerly breeze all day, . . . . . soddit, . . . never mind, tomorrow is another day,

Got more seeds yesterday, . . . Falcorosso F1 hybrid, . . at £2.99 a packet with only 6 seeds per packet I thought it was a bit expensive, they do say on the packet there are only 6 seeds however.

Balconi Red, . . sweet cherry they say.

What can I say?? Capt Mainwaring comes to mind–stupid boy

Wellllll, . . . charlie’s name was on the packet, . . what else can I say, . . they’re duchy seeds from his dutchy I suppose, . . . will I have to talk to them as they grow ?

The greenhouse, . . . I had it all planned but the best laid schemes so they say, . . . the original plan was 4 foot wide but after drawing the line on the ground today it’s not wide enough, at that width I’d have to squeeze down a passage 2 foot wide between two rows of toms, . . . the plans have changed, . . it’s now gonna be 5 foot wide, . . . . (makes a note, . . must get more sheets) . .

I’ve heard however big your greenhouse is, its never big enough, I used to have one years ago, no room now. I went round B&Q’s to get some tom plants, I managed to get 3 very sorry looking gardeners delight for 49p, they are now sitting on my kitchen windowsill, they will pick up, I’ve bought 3 in case 2 give up or something, I don’t really need 3 plants but they do look sick.

I bought some koralik from ebay 99p for 20 seeds I think it said. I got about 60 seeds. I have started 20 off and 18 have germinated.

Bargain!!!

The two pots of tomato seeds that I resowed as they hadn’t germinated are up; one looks suspiciously like a pepper; they look very much alike when the first (not true) leaves appear, but the tomato has a slightly hairier stem … I guess I will have to wait and see.

Nero at that price they should be talking to you-next year let me know in advance and I will gladly send you some seeds.

Now to that greenhouse, assuming it`s not yet built, one thing I would advise is to make the entrance wide enough to get a wheelbarrow in. It will save you a lot of effort over the years. And put in enough ventialation, houses can get very warm. My 16*16ft house has 3 louvres and 6 roof vents and that is by no means excessive

Thanks for that OG, . . you are a mine of information mate and it’s much appreciated, . . . the job’s nearly done, . . the roof’s on, and two sides, . . it’s 5 foot wide now and 14 foot long but tapers down to 4 foot at the back to allow access down the side of the hut.

That acrylic sheeting’s good stuff to work with, very easy to cut with a pair of steel snips, . . the ventilation will be OK, we always get a slight breeze West to East so a vent at each end should do the trick, . . . I have 4 heavy stone troughs 4 foot long which will do as planters instead of grow bags, . . tomorrow should finish the job so I’ll post a pic to let you all see how easy it is.

Looking around the garden centres at the price of greenhouses, . . it’s a rip off what some of them want, . . there’s one at £100 12 X 6 X 6 it has a tubular steel frame and it’s basically a poly tunnel, . . . they don’t last more than 3 years if you’re lucky, . . B&Q are selling one that has acrylic panels for glazing, it’s so small it’s ridiculous, they’re asking £150 for that one.

My greenhouse was a bargain - FREE!!!

It’s a bit functional looking, but I hope to get a good three or four years use from it. And it is on my allotment so it doesn’t need to be pretty.

Can’t get any cheaper than that PPH ;-), . . . I have to say I just downed tools at 7pm and I’m knackered, . . I was at it for 8 hours.

May we have a pic when it’s finished, Nero?
