I agree with Jem, most are daft anyway :-p
My darling mum, long gone now, was the most down to earth, no nonsense woman you could possibly meet. She certainly did not believe in the supernatural but one day whilst the family were discussing the subject she came out with a story that we thought really spooky.
Mum hailed from County Kerry, Southern Ireland and lived with my grandparents and 4 siblings in a tiny two up two down cottage in the heart of the country with the nearest neighbours about a mile away either side.
She told us that if and when she or her siblings wanted to go into the nearest town of Ballylongford, they had to get the donkey and cart out (yes, we laughed at that).
Anyway, she told us that one Saturday night, my grandfather was ill in bed and everyone was worried about his health. My grandmother told my mum that there was no point in everyone sitting around worrying about him and to get themselves off to their usual local Saturday night dance. So mum, along with her 3 sisters got ready whilst her brother got the donkey out of the field and got the cart ready. Off they went.
She then told us that unfortunately only an hour later her brother turned up to take them home as my grandfather had taken a turn for the worst and grandmother had sent him for the priest the doctor and the girls as it didn’t look good.
They were returning down the lane nearing the cottage with my mum sitting in front with her brother when mum suddenly turned to him and said…”I thought you said dad was very poorly? look there” her brother looked and they both saw him coming out of the only door, the front door, and walk on the path around the side of the cottage to the back. She said he looked right at them and then walked on.
When they got to the cottage, The doctor, the priest and Grandmother were sitting by the fire, My grandfather had passed away about 20 minutes earlier!
Mum nor her brother ever mentioned it again. The others hadn’t seen him and they didn’t want to upset my grandmother. This was the one and only time she talked about it and even after telling us she still insisted she didn’t believe in ghosts but couldn’t explain what she had seen.
I thought it really spooky !!
Thank you for that, Shropshire Girl.
‘This was the one and only time she talked about it and even after telling us she still insisted she didn’t believe in ghosts but couldn’t explain what she had seen.’
Your Mum and I have the same approach to these strange things that happen.
A good account there SG, I’ve heard one or two similar experiences from the Kingdom County, Kerry people are the salt of the earth, lovely people and very easy to get on with in my experience.
Loved the very descriptive story SG - anything to do with Ireland and I go all soppy, love the place and the people - smashing x
Thanks for the story SG very good reading
I tend to believe something like this happened Realist,I believe ’ something ’ came from outer space and and couldnt return ,then settled here to become ‘Mankind’.I think this is the belief of a’ supreme being [God ] in the sky and constant pleas , to this’ Deity’ for forgiveness.Maybe 'we ’ were put here in a sort of a ‘prison colony’ , maybe to return is our Heaven to where we will ‘return’
Thank you all for your kind comments. My mum was indeed a lovely woman, loved by all who knew her.
Another spooky story which, if I ever think about it all these years later, still makes me laugh.
When mum and dad were offered their first 3 bedroomed council house in the mid fifties, they didn’t have much furniture to to bring with them back then because they and my as then,5 brothers aged 7, 8, 9, (me 10,) 11 and 12 - had just moved out of a slum building. I was okay as being the only girl I laid claim to the third bedroom which was basically just a box room. Mum and Dad had the small double room and the 5 lads had the largest double room and (Lord help us) for the time being they all had to sleep in one double bed - the three eldest at the top of the bed and the two smallest at the bottom !
What Mum and Dad kept to themselves of course though was that the tenant who had previously lived there (prior to the tenant before us, who didn’t stay there for long) had hanged himself in the the little public copse right next to the house !!
Anyway, we had been there only three or four days when one night around 2 am in the morning, my 11 year old brother Seamus woke the whole house up with loud shouting for my Mum. She and my Dad, closely followed by me rushed into the boy’s bedroom. All five of them were wide awake with his shouting - now it was for mum to turn the light on !!
It seems that Seamus always bagged the outside of the bed (which was against the wall) because it was easiest to go to the bathroom.
That night he had been woken by what he said was someone forcefully trying to remove the bedclothes from him. Half asleep and not realising the time it was he said he thought it was one of my brothers playing a prank on him,so told him to “get lost” and without even the effort of opening his eyes, tried to go back to sleep. But the blanket being moved again woke him up properly this time and although it was really dark he said he focused on the room and swears (even to this day) that there was a man standing at the side of the bed looking down at him!
Seamus said he was so frozen with fear that he rolled over my other brother Patrick who was in the middle and pushed him out to the end of the bed !! He had the bedclothes right over his head with fear and wide awake now he said he peeped out from beneath the sheet and saw that he was still standing there! That’s when he shouted at the top of his voice for my mum.
Of course, Mum and Dad had to reassure him by looking under the bed, in the wardrobe, ensure the windows were secure, let him to sleep nearest the wall and leave the light on! He said he didn’t sleep a wink for the rest of the night and spent it under the sheets terrified.!
Hello, and no way was brave little me going back to my bedroom where I was on my own !!
I was so scared by what he said that I slept in Mum and Dad’s bed with them for the rest of the night.
Of course Seamus was ribbed unmercifully by the rest of the lads the next day (as you do) but he told my Dad that he was wide awake the second time it happened, It definitely wasn’t a trick of the dark or a shadow, the blankets were moved off of him twice !
Now who knows, but nothing like that ever happened in that room again, He never slept on the outside of the bed again though ! and I’m sorry Seamus, but whenever that story is related all I can think of is him rolling over my poor little brother Patrick and making him the sacrificial lamb for whatever he saw or imagined he saw. (talk about self preservation!!) :-D:-D
The Ghostly Giant
One of my students, Laura, told me that at age 6 her dad left her and her mum. Her mum was devastated and on anti-depressants: she fell asleep crying in front of the every evening. Laura was very sad and she cried too. She sat in her special place, the top step on the stairs - her mother never heard her crying.
It was at that time that the ‘ghost’ appeared. He came into her bedroom through the door which was left ajar so Laura could listen out for her mum. He appeared as a giant man- shaped shadowy figure who crossed the room and stood by her bed. She thought she heard him saying, “hush, hush…’ and though she was scared at first she always fell asleep. It was as though he was protecting her. She never told her mum, she didn’t want to worry her and she wondered if she had conjured him up herself.
Years passed, she stopped crying on the stairs, the giant disappeared, her mum got well again and met a nice man who she married and they moved to the nearby town.
On the day of the move she met the incoming tenants who had a daughter her age, Cathy. Two years later when she began college, Cathy was on the same course. During break one day they got chatting about Laura’s old house and she told Cathy about the ghostly giant. “Have you ever seen or heard anything odd there?” she asked.
“No, not me,” Cathy replied, but my mum says she sometimes hears the sound of a child crying on the stairs…”
Great experiences ,thankyou for posting them Shropshiregirl and Countrygirl and others that have shared theirs too …Ive enjoyed reading them no end
Here we go,I have had several things happen in my life,One that still shiver’s me Timber’s We lived in Bedford England,I was a military brat.I was laying in my bed watching it rain one saturday,I was looking at the little greenhouse in the backyard and noticed the door was open, all of a sudden I felt a presence at the back of neck, like someone was almost touching me,I froze in fear because there was no sound just like something had lunged just short of touching me.It just kept saying my name rapidly in my ear.I was scared to death,I could not move, but I knew I had to get away.I mustered everything I had in me and once my feet hit the floor I ran like hell and never looked back.I ran downstairs stairs and just started crying and attacked my older brother, just dove at him and started swinging,he flipped the situation and my dad grabbed him off of me and pulled me off the ground and asked "what the hell my problem was"I started crying and blubbering that he was in my bedroom messing with me,My dad told me “no he wasn’t he was here with me building a model” my mom and sister stepped out of the kitchen, just staring at me.I was told to go sit on the couch,so I did,a little while later my older sister came and sat on the couch and said"I seen her too"Later on as years passed My sister told me more and more about her experiences. She told me "the lady doesn’t want us here"I can only say it is one of the creepiest things I ever experienced.
Great one Dragon do tell us more☺
Good post Dragon ,mustve been very creepy knowing the lady didnt want you there, did you have something like that happen regularl,or was it a one off occurence, the voices in your ear mustve been very scary eekk
Ooo yes a good one - don’t leave us in suspenders though, updates please
While my dad was Stationed at Chicksands AFB,there was on old monistary there,it became the Officers Club, during remodels there was a Nuns Skeleton found walled up.They story goes a Monk and the Nun were having an affair and were lovers, when discovered he was beheaded, and she was walled up to suffocate to death. To this day her spirit is said to walk the grounds looking for her lover on the anniversary of their deaths every year. This all was printed many years ago in the Local Bedford newspaper and the article also came out in the Air Force Times,a military newspaper. Also there was a house in Bedford that the owner offered 100 pounds to anyone who could stay the night. The story goes at dark the door to the living room would open and close, then the rocking chair would begin to rock back and forth, then stop, and any thing on the fireplace mantle would be thrown at whoever was in the house.then bigger stuff, would be thrown around the room, this is said to keep on till daylight,or until the people left,No one ever made it to daylight.
Oooooooooooooooooer
Just that once to me but alot to my sister till she moved out of the attic. The attic was a finished bedroom, there were 2 bedrooms and a bath on the second floor, and ground floor had living room, dining room and kitchen the hallway from the front door ran straight between the stairway to the restroom. The basement had a finished apartment with a bath also.My older brother to this day says nothing ever happened to him.But when the topic comes up,he is quick to change it.
A couple of weeks ago I google earthed Bedford and had to find the old Castle Mound to orientate myself. It has changed alot,I lived at #8 Grove Place, now Little Grove Place used to be directly opposite, now it is south of Grove Place,I am assuming North is top on google earth. Also there is a bar called The 3 Cups,There was always a bar there,Same name I can’t remember. Also there is a John’s Fish and Chips, west of the 3 Cups, there was always a fish and chip’s place there. My old house is gone.
