The Queen has died

Why shouldn’t Harry pay tribute to his Granny?
William has also published an online statement, on Instagram.
I would not begrudge either William or Harry making a public tribute to their Granny - why should Harry be denied paying a public tribute when the whole world has the opportunity to pay tribute to her online - if folk like OFF members can Post how they feel about the Queen’s death, I don’t see why anyone would pick on Harry for doing so.

No reason at all except that it ill befits one who has slagged off most of her entire family to the world .

Dog Lovers NI

Thank you to a Dog Lover for sharing this beautiful poem

“The corgi’s lament”

I woke up in my basket, the day after you’d gone.

I felt so sad and lonely, no lap to sit upon.

I had no-one to run to,

No treats to take with glee.

I had no plans for walkies, now you are not with me.

I know I’ll be looked after,

I know they will be kind.

But you were my true Mistress,

And I’ve been left behind.

I hope your journey’s peaceful and all I wish and pray,

Is I’ll be there beside you,

Once again one day.”

Royal Parks said their staff and contractors are ‘working around the clock’ to keep the park ‘looking its best’ for the thousands of people that arrive every day to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II.

It comes as the Royal Parks, which manages the official site for tributes in Green Park, asked mourners to only ‘lay organic or compostable material’ and remove any wrapping from the bouquets being left.

They also said that while people could bring teddies and soft toys if they wanted to, they would ‘prefer that they didn’t’ for sustainability reasons.

Will President Biden really arrive in a bus/coach with every other head of state/VIP?

I suspect that many people are struggling to know how to act, as most have never experienced the loss of a monarch. I think the public clapping is just a way to show their appreciation for the great service she gave to her country and its people.
I would also like to say that the Scottish people have done a lovely job of saying their final farewell.

According to this evening’s news the coins with King Charlie’s head won’t appear until 2023.

It is also undecided whether his head will appear on the $5 note; apparently it only appeared because it was a tribute to the Queen rather than the fact that she was the Monarch. Her head doesn’t appear on any of the other notes.

In my younger day, we had coins with quite a few deceased monarchs on them, some of which turned out to be rare and quite expensive. I don’t think it matters which monarch appears on coins or the folding stuff, as long as new coinage and notes contain the head of the present monarch.

Decimalisation put paid to that …

I clearly remember getting old pennies with the head of George V and George VI as well as Elizabeth II in my pocket money as a young child.

I always noticed that Elizabeth was facing the opposite way to the previous two Kings and wondered why.

Then I read something in an article today which said
“From the time of Charles II onwards, a tradition developed of monarchs being represented on the coinage facing in the opposite direction to their immediate predecessor.”

Then I remembered that Edward VIII came in between George V & VI.
I have never seen a coin with his head on - I didn’t think he’d been King long enough for any to be minted - but when I looked online, I found pics of coins with his head on and it faced the same way as the two Georges - curious, I thought - this doesn’t tie in with the ancient tradition the press is reporting on now.

So I did a bit more googling and found the explanation for 3 successive Kings having their profile facing left - it was all because of Edward VIII’s vanity!

“The exception to this was in the brief reign of Edward VIII. He liked portraits of himself facing to the left, even though, according to tradition, he should have faced to the right. Designs for proposed coins for his reign show Edward VIII facing to the left.

The tradition was restored in the reign of George VI, with his portrait facing left as if Edward VIII’s had faced right “

I find bits of history trivia like this quite interesting.

That’s very interesting Boot, thanks for that.

I did have some old pennies once with Queen Victoria on them. I’ll have a look, I might have squirreled them away somewhere…

I just feel sorry for all the companies having to reapply for the royal warrant and relabel their goods

#NotMyKing protests in the UK got a mention on the ABC as well as the heavy handled response of the police to republican protests.

Hi

Behaving like a pillock during the biggest security operation the World has seen is a stupid idea.

Normal service will be resumed afterwards.

Um I am not sure I agree with that at all. It seems that this is the perfect time to protest and gain maximum publicity. The opulence, detachment from the realities of normal life and the remoteness of the royal family and their hangers on is writ large.

Or do you think this is just bread and circuses to take the population’s mind off the realities of life facing them this winter? and nothing must be allowed to detract from that?

Hi

You are entitled to your views Bruce.

They do not change anything however.#

If you choose to behave like a threat in a very tense situation such as this, that is your choice.

Do not expect others to protect what you consider to be your rights.

I do kind of agree with this bit…although I fail to see how lavish overtures worth millions of pounds is going to distract Mrs Smith from worrying about how she will feed the kids and heat the house when the kids are off school over Christmas. Or even during school time because the school is shut due to the cost of everything.

I think you are confused. They are NOT my rights, I don’t live there, they are YOUR rights.

I am also wondering what threat chanting and holding up a sign actually poses.

Crikey what a bunch of delicate flowers everyone has become .

I’m a bit concerned that everything (including hospitals and doctors) is closed on Monday. Scheduled appointments have been moved on until…whenever Schools shut, shops shut…its feels like a lockdown!
