The impossible maths question

Speaking as one who just about scraped through 0 level maths
I would have died if I had got this question

Hi

That question is stupid.

Exam questions should be about what you have learnt and understood, what prepares you for the next level.

They should not be about destroying your confidence.

I have to ask when would you need to apply that in the real world and how many times?
Bit like learning trigonometry with tangents sine and co sine never used it in all my life nor algebra come to that. A complete waste of school time. come to that even French, who wants to learn a language if you never go to the country
Better off playing with playdough

On the face of it, don’t sound that tricky really.

I have a vague memory of learning how to work out areas in circles using radius lines and chords to make equilateral triangles in the GCE O Level curriculum.
I quite enjoyed doing stuff like that when I was at school - but I would really struggle to remember how to work it out now!

I invented my own rules, seemed to work.

I can’t read it unless I subscribe or switch off my adblocker.

Now that’s the excuse I would use if I was sitting the exam.

Hi

A level Maths should not include unsolvable problems.

They should simply be based on rational solutions to existing problems.

If you do not know the answer, don’t expect 18 year olds to answer it.

Maths and Physics still baffle the most intelligent.

Chemistry and Biology are much more difficult.

I agree, Swimmy, they are difficult - but fun!

The answer is 42. Now, what was the question?

It would have been better if the question put precisely rather than vague “shaded part of some circles.”.

I’ve yet to read a report that actually shows the question in full. Does anyone have a link to it?
