The everyday household task that youngsters struggle to do because of technology

Well now…this is absolutely amazing! :astonished: I didn’t even know about Sous Vide cooking, so I can see how well this would work out! Learn something new everyday on this forum…:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Still not getting a dishwasher though :joy:

Where did I state they wasted water? My concern is the electric power consumed by the complete cycle right through to drying and of course the length of time its noisily going about its various cycles. At the kitchen sinks, the whole process takes less that 10 mins from start to finish.

I think Besoeker was making a general comment LD, not to you personally. :+1:

Yes,I have watched on tv or YouTube some time back, people using them to cook food in,I kid you not, so agree with all of that Annie.

You have to take into account the heating of the hot water used for washing by hand (unless you wash in cold).

Its genius, using them to cook in, it really is. Bet they don’t suggest that in the instruction booklet!

I can’t remember what they cooked, but, I do remember thinking, what the heck are they thinking,:joy::sweat_smile::open_mouth::open_mouth:…I couldn’t believe what I was watching,:joy::sweat_smile:

Since I divorced my last dishwasher I have taken over the duties. I use one plate, one bowl, one cup, one knife, fork and spoon. They are washed and reused straight from the draining board.

I have mixed feelings about dishwashers. I have never owned or used one but have known several people who, living alone like me, would stack their dirty dishes in the dishwasher until either they ran out of plates (or whatever) or the dishwasher was full. They would start the machine when they went to bed and unpack it in the morning putting the (now dry) contents away to restart the cycle again.

That also seems a very satisfactory way of carrying on. Reminiscent of my much younger time when I would pile dishes in the sink until I ran out of something when i would wash the lot.

My records provide my grandkids with much amusement and shock when they discover both sides have music on them, likewise the cassette tapes.

It is somewhat annoying to think that there are people alive today who don’t remember when TV stations would shut down at midnight because they had bugger all left to show except shit (that shit is now known as satellite/cable TV).

Such is life.

I’m sure many people who live alone do this… there should be a way of buying such things as single items, rather than multi packs!

Actually all those things were bought as single items from either a Chinese supermarket or the Sydney Markets. However I did buy more than one because I do have visitors.

You can buy single items out of some shops Pixie, I think Wilco is one.

Plus charity shops, I bought some lovely Christmas mugs from a charity shop, only 50 p each.

Of course and I know both of our sinks consume considerable less energy in the way of heated water than a full cycle from a dishwasher.
I’ve just checked the Kenwood at Curry’s on eco setting and that informed me it would be running for 222 minutes for a full cycle … that’s 222 minutes of annoying sound (rating C). No thanks, I’ll stick with swift manual washing and then forget about it :+1:

On the VERY rare occasions when I wash dishes by hand I do rinse the glasses.
But my dishwasher is my friend !!

And they don’t waste water! My washing up water goes onto the garden - keeps down the aphids.

Some dishwashers are much quieter I read these days, 44 db.

My CH also heats the washing up/bath water - so no extra cost there.

I have done it once or twice before, if I have seen a really nice or quirky mug, but I wouldn’t do it now, because of Covid. And I don’t think we have Wilco up here, but at least they do sell things singly…it would annoy me having to buy sets of things if I only used the one.

Edit: We have 10 Wilko shops here in Scotland, I just checked. All are too far for me to go and have a nosy, but I’m sure there are other similar places like this closer to home.

That’s a good idea! :+1:

Personally I would not have a dish washer as a gift (Unless Martin Shaw volunteered to come and do it). :smiley_cat: :smiley_cat:

I do not see the point of having a machine where I have to do half it’s work for it! Things have to be rinsed before going in to it. It dulls crystal glass ware - so that has to rinsed and polished when it comes out. If china has a gold/silver rim/pattern it cannot go into a DW anyway. If you fill it/runit after every meal it is wasteful. If you leave dirty dishes in there until you have a full load it is unhygienic.

Plus - I have lost count of the times I have had to reject cutlery in restaurants because it is not properly clean.

Much prefer to do things myself - and make sure they are done properly.

Eewww! I couldn’t eat there if they gave me dirty cutlery.
