Scarecrow Trail in Cheddar. We had been hoping to get out whilst this was on during the week but I’ve been poorly. Yesterday I was given a diagnosis and medication, and thankfully it turned out that I wasn’t infectious.
The trail officially ended today and some appeared to have already been removed, but we managed to find thirty odd still being displayed in the evening.
Brilliant, Fruitcake, some very creative ones there - guaranteed to scare any crow witless! We usually have a scarecrow trail in the village in September - but not seen anything about it just yet.
We heard about it via local news-feeds and obtained a map with them marked on. We never knew how many little streets and housing estates, old and new were in and around Cheesetown.
We even found two pubs we didn’t know about before tucked away around the place.
Same here. Their main farm and manufactory is opposite and around the retirement village where my parents used to live. Mum liked being pushed round the site in her wheelchair past the apple orchards when the trees were covered in blossom.
Does anyone get awarded a prize for the best scarecrow?
If they don’t …they should.
I’m amazed someone (of a commercial bent) hasn’t thought of doing the same thing with Guy Fawkes for Bonfire Night, especially as now it’s more like Bonfire Week.
I don’t know. There was a scarecrow trail a few years ago where hunters had to identify the characters, and prizes were offered to those who got them all or the most correct.
Some were obvious but some were quite obscure. We never found all of them, and some we weren’t able to identify, but we enjoyed the experience anyway.
This one in Cheddar was part of a flower show combined with private gardens open to the public, growing sunflowers, and the scarecrows trail.
In my opinion, Captain Jack Sparrow was the best, but it was obvous some were made by kids so unless it was broken down into age groups I think an overall “best scarecrow” competition might have been unfair.
Years ago we came across another trail. The best of that bunch was a copper in full uniform, but the head had been replaced with a speed camera!
