We have always used a litter tray and it is one of many of our jokes here… 
On a serious note the litter tray has always been with us, as always will be Cat Slaves.
…Our Two Cats only started to use said Litter Tray on a regular basis since the 4 Hunting Dogs arrived next door…
…I have seen them use our garden, but not very often…
We use a mix of two types of Cat Litter, but it still gets carried about in their Paws…that is annoying actually…
