Most of today’s footballers are worse than kids. To much money and not enough sense.:surprised::shock:
Can’t argue with that Shaz. Obviously AB, Suarez has a personal problem with Evra but it should’nt boil over in to the farcical state of affairs that has errupted.
To change the subject, what about Glasgow Rangers going into Administration?
Now the rumours are rife that up to 8 Premiere league clubs could follow suit. The result of over inflated wages and middle men maybe?
Of interest to thread members, today’s fixtures include Cowdenbeath away at Arbroath, West Ham away at in form Blackpool and Lincoln city also away at Kidderminster while tomorrow Liverpool are at home in the FA cup versus Brighton, that one is a 4.30 kick off and is being shown live on ESPN.
Good luck to everybody
Looks like everyone has jumped ship on this thread but just in case after Liverpool demolished Brighton 6-1 in today’s FA Cup match at Anfield, courtesy of a Martin Skirtel header and 3 own goals from the Seagulls plus a late goal from Luis Suarez who also missed a penalty and Even Andy Carroll scored plus got the man of the match award, this is the draw for the 6th round of the FA Cup to be played over the weekend of 18/19 March…
Liverpool v Stoke City
Everton v Sunderland
Chelsea or Birmingham v Leicester
Stevenage or Tottenham v Bolton Wanderers
You’ll have to let me know if you want this thread to continue, shame if it dies from lack of interest but it seems like Hammer has had enough and the postings are getting very few and far between, I don’t want to be accused of talking to myself
Sorry Bob, despite your valiant efforts , its not been the same since Hammer departed. His enthusiasm and knowledge was second to none. As for myself, I’m pretty sick to death about all the crap that surrounds football at the moment. Racism, diving, overpaid players, dodgy managers, pundits spouting cliches, etc. I’m more concerned about the fans. No bugger gives a toss whether they get a good deal or not. Went to Lincolns game today. Cold, uncomfortable, £12 concession, fosters £3 a pint, indigestable pie, route one football, goal conceded last minute, all in all felt like somebodys taking the piss. I’m not coming on this thread sorry, just off to join the Foreign Legion.
Be careful what you wish for John, that lot are a rum bunch indeed, a very funny conception of the diamond formation.
You once told me quite rightly to support your local team and I hope that you do.
Whilst in Burnley the other day I took a breather on a seat that had been kindly placed in the mall for us less than mobile patrons.
Strangely I was immediately transported back to the halcyon days at the Boleyn and I felt comfortably engulfed by a sea of claret and blue. I wondered if the ref on the pale horse had blown for time and this was indeed heaven.
I could almost hear the delightful strains of ‘Bubbles’ wafting through the air when the wife suddenly said “shall I take your team photo?”
Awoken from my stupor I turned to see I had inadvertantly sat in front of a huge Burnley FC team picture that their fans could use as a backdrop.
My lady said the look on my face as the realisation of the heinious crime I had committed dawned upon me was well…priceless.
Keep the faith my friend you know it has to get better.
Hammer! The prodigal son has returneth! Yep, sod the Legion, just stick to the British version! Good to hear from you. You all right Hammer? Claret and blue? Burnley? You’ll need to go to Confused.com! Your’e correct, stick with your team. If the wife gives you the hump, you just get on with it, same as football teams. Be interested you get your take on King Arry for England or not. Good to hear from you.
Hello John,
well now, ‘H’ for England manager? The present popular candidate from Poplar. I first saw him playing for us as an 18 year old midfielder, not one of those you would instantly say was going to be a great, more competant really. The late great Ron Greenwood obviously saw something in him that Spurs did not which was ok by us.
He returned to the Boleyn as assistant manager to Billy Bonds and took over full control in 1994 in circumstances that were less than convivial.
In all honesty I don’t think we will ever fully understand what happened there.
In any event, there is no doubting his tactical football brain or indeed his superior knowledge of teams and players. I still rue the day he was forced out of our club as we have never recovered. I would doubt there are any better at the England task than Harry, he certainly has no English rival of any substance and lets face it imported managers have not worked too well thus far.
There is also the Spurs angle to consider, they have given him a great deal of support and whilst he has repaid their faith by results it must be a difficult decision for him to make. He may not however relish the prospect of a job that has thanks largely to the gutter press become a poison chalice. Any sort of job share should in my humble opinion be a complete no no.
As to his suitability with the old farts that still dominate the FA is I think still to be seen, but it boils down as to whether they/us want to win anything or have an eloquent public speaker. In Mr Capello we got neither so the writing is writ large but will they bother to read it ?
Onward.
Beautifully put as usual. I shall send a copy of your thread for Harry to ponder! It is a dilemma for him. As you say, its a job only for them with skins like Rhinos, can just see the Sun with a headline picture “Arry Artichoke”, after an underwhelming England performance. The lure of the Euros will I think swing it, win lose or bust, he can sign up just for that. Do well, then maybe Brazil for the World Cup. Its a tough one thats for sure. Interesting if the FA sling him the 6 Mil Capello got.
John, ‘Arry Artichoke’, simply brilliant.
Ahhh, just noticed the return of Hammer, welcome back, nice to see your postings again. Also thanks for your comments John, glad you have changed your mind about the Foreign Legion :).
OK you footballers, its time for a proper team to take the plunge, Its Rugby this weekend and this damned old fool has agreed to go to see my son, the woman has lost her marbles, anyway I am playing the "Head of the family card and demanding the Ireland match be on his TV< wish me luck, Annie.
Absolutely wonderful to see you back Hammer, its not been the same since you left, will have to come back to the football thread again.
I took time out to listen to the whole of the press conference held by Englands caretaker manager Stuart Pearce before our friendly International on Wednesday against the Netherlands.
What a nice change it made to hear a first class commitment, a definate course of action for the future, enthusiasm and perhaps above all else we all clearly know what he said.
He came across as more than competant as indeed he was as a player and even managed to body swerve a few questions that certain allegedy more experienced managers would have got steamed up about.
Well done Stuart, maybe the job is not as cut and dried as the luminaries think.
The announced squad for the Netherlands.
Goalkeepers: Scott Carson (Bursaspor), Joe Hart (Manchester City), Robert Green (West Ham United)
Defenders: Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Leighton Baines (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Micah Richards (Manchester City), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur)
Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), James Milner (Manchester City), Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur), Ashley Young (Manchester United), Theo Walcott (Arsenal)
Forwards: Darren Bent (Aston Villa), Fraizer Campbell (Sunderland), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United)
Did’nt see the press conference myself, but do agree Pearce would be an interesting choice. However he has too many irons in the fire at the moment, what with the under 21s and the GB Olympic team. What about AVB, soon to be given the tin tack from laughing boy? Be nice to have a younger bloke for a change.
I think I would rather lean towards an English manager this time around, nice to be able to understand the various interviews for a start
I could not let today pass by without remembering one rather special player that I had the honour and privilege to meet once or twice and watch play many, many times.
I speak of Robert Frederick Chelsea “Bobby” Moore, who was taken from us all too soon on this day, the 24 February 1993 aged 51.
RIP Bob
They cannot even imitate you these days in any respect.

God knows what poor Bobby would have made of todays shenanigans regarding the captaincy etc.I remember well that his funeral service was held at Putney Crematorium, near to where I was living at the time. His type are gone forever from football sadly.
Today’s Carling cup final must have been great viewing for the ‘neutral’ observer as Liverpool contrived to do it the hard way once again, eventually winning the trophy after extra time and penalties at Wembley, talk about a roller coaster game, a great pity that there had to be a loser as Cardiff made a nonsense of the gap between the Championship and the Premierhip. Although I am elated at Liverpool actually winning a trophy at long last I did feel sorry for the Bluebirds and their superb supporters but that’s the name of the game and to see Anthony Gerrard (Steve’s cousin) in such obvious torment after his penalty was saved by Pepe Reina to hand the cup to Liverpool was in itself indicative of the scale of dedication and effort that Cardiff brought to this final.
On this display the Welsh side would be a credit to the top flight and they will now have a chance to try themselves out against high flying West Ham in the championship next weekend.
Well done to both sides for an intriguing final, thoroughly enjoyable as far as I am concerned.
Yes Bob,
A thoroughly entertaining match which in fairness could have gone either way in both the normal time and indeed the shoot out.
I was very impressed with Cardiff for the way they went about the job in hand, if they gain promotion from the Championship as they surely must, they will do very well.
We play them at Cardiff next week and I fear the worst, having seen a recording of our incomprehensible and frankly dismal performance yesterday it should be a rout as they are streets away from us in quality and above all else commitment.
The one player I was very pleased for was my old favourite Red, Dirk Kuyt.
He came on almost too late, made things happen at once, scored what looked like the winner and then stopped a certain Cardiff goal at the other end. Not content with that, he stepped up to the spot and converted his penalty with aplomb, unlike some others.
I have to say once again that Carroll is a luxury they should dispense with and Mr Gerrard is finding life hard at the moment.
Nice also to see Steve Clarke enjoying his Liverpool stint with KD.
Hard luck Cardiff, a cruel way to lose but a great performance, just have a rest next week please.
