This is deffo not meant as a humorous comment about marriageā¦ but back in the day, life imprisonment tended to mean life imprisonment. But this has changed in terms of the sense or āpermanenceā.
Similarly, the āuntil death do us partā bit of the vows seems to be interpreted nowadays as the death of the marriage, rather than the participants.
