Cabinet Minister Lucy Powell interviewed on radio and television revealed that the new Labour government had abolished the winter fuel allowance for most pensioners to appease the “markets”, the international speculators who lend money to governments
No surprise from a Starmer led Labour for some of us.
You cannot defend the indefensible.
Pensioners will not forget this at the next election.
I certainly won’t.
And remember this was introduced by a Labour Government.
Even the Tories, who considered doing this, realised what a huge mistake it would be.
A Labour government this is certainly not.
It is a shame that many have forgotten how the last labour government behaved. They sucked out the countries financial reserve and left the coffers empty. Doing the same again this time with huge wages increases to those who don’t need it
IMO Stasi Starmer has inherited the Blair Blunderbuss and not forgetting his heavy jackboots either for riding rough-shod over the nations.
Brown started the ball rolling by deeply plundering pensions and now Stasi Starmer has completed the incursion by removing pensioners WFA.
I would never vote Tory and I used to favour Labour until I discovered what Wilson and Robens did with the money donated by the public to help the Aberfan victims.I think of the two parties they are the more dishonest.
I would imagine this was the plan from the start. Starmer knew he’d be getting in to No10 without too much trouble, so this was on his agenda. The so called “Black Hole,” was trotted out without too much evidence being provided. Starmer & Reeves knew that if they floated this winter payment withdrawal for pensioners during the election, it would have been a disaster for them. Will our bus passes and prescriptions be next for the chop, time to get the worry beads out!
Fortunately here in Wales they have nothing to do with Westminster.
We all get bus passes at 60 and everyone, regardless of age ,gets free prescriptions.
The Welsh Government wouldn’t dare mess with those.
I was raised in a Labour supporting household, Dad campaigned for Labour during elections and was a union rep. he would not recognise the party that calls itself “Labour” these days. Instead of looking out for the working class they attack the poorest and most vulnerable whilst ensuring their union paymasters receive above inflation pay awards. I also question why they are not making the “difficult decision” to review the £300+ per day paid to those who turn up at the unelected House of Lords and cancelling the subsidised restaurants and bars in both houses, I also note that MPs are keeping their own “energy” allowance
I have to say the current Labour party have forgotten their roots - those who founded the party must be turning in their graves.
I am sorry to have lost the winter fuel payment but appreciate the country is in a mess so sacrifices are needed to help sort things out.
Due to the way my Direct Debits are paid for water and council tax , I pay over 8 and 10 months, so I have a bit of extra cash in the winter so can cope. I have also invested in thermal leggings and woollen jumpers from Ebay so will manage with the cold .
I was born just after the war ended when there were shortages of most things and people were used to managing with very little without complaint , I think as a nation we have become too soft and it won’t do us any harm to cope with bit of hardship.
That is not the answer and could leave your unheated/underheated property in danger of Interstitial Condensation👇 causing it to rot from the inside out. Interstitial condensation - Wikipedia
If they are determind to stop the WFP then they should also lose theirs too, it’s a lot more than £200 as well. A good Government shares the pain and leads by example.
That would be okay Meg provided that we are ‘all in it together’ but we are not. Do you think the members of our government will be investing in thermal leggings and woollen jumpers Meg?
I think not…
The government would do well to support investment in better insulation which is poor in many houses. 300 mm of loft insulation, triple glazing, better fitting doors and wall insulation can make a huge difference. They might also consider a scheme to encourage & fund people to move from large, old houses (difficult and expensive to heat) into newer, perhaps smaller, better insulated houses. There might other ways to help pensioners (or everyone) reduce their heating bill.
As it is, they are taking away with one hand but not giving back support with the other.
Hi Bob I am sure MPs don’t resort to thermal leggings
I pride myself on my frugality and don’t fret if others have more than I do , that is life and not something to worry me …
They say ‘you don’t miss what you don’t have’ and all my live I have had to live on very little being starved by my stepmother then starting work in a kennels at 15 with a wage of £1 a week and starved of food yet again resorting to eating the dogs breakfast food (honey, milk and oats also cod ,they ate better than we did).
I envy no man, I am richer than most people surrounded by beautiful countryside, still able to walk (just about with the aid of a stick) and content with the little I have .
Rachel Reeve says, “The state pension is worth £900 more than it was a year ago and energy bills are lower this winter than they were last winter”. Sounds like a good deal.
