SPCA RULES on dog adoption

I our latest dog 6 month’s We rehomed after my previous two dogs died within 3 months of each other, both 14 years old and both much loved,
After a month of not having any pets we decided to give yet another dog a for ever home and so off to the SPCA to have a look at what they had that needed a home,
We did’nt mind breed or age and even if the dog had health problems,
As always it was hard looking at the dogs that they had and we did see a heinze 57 breed that looked like he’d givin up on anyone wanting him,
I asked about his past (he’d been caught by the dog warden hiding in a woods) and he was about 5 years old,
When we’d decided this was the one we offered it a home "Only to be told that because we are both of pension age we could not have a young dog because the dog may out live us and they"d be back in the rescue looking for a re-home, (I at the time was 75yrs)
Over the years we have had 6 rescue dogs and all throm the SPCA,
I was really annoyed at this new ruling and told them so,
The dog we did re-home is 12years of age and infact came from an OAP who was now living in an old peoples home & No dog’s allowed.
Whats your thoughts on this age to re-home a Dog,?

My wife and I owned a boarding kennels and cattery for about 24 years. We were licence to board 116 dogs and 42 cats.
Cattery

1of 2 main kennel blocks

also had isolation kennels and groomimg Parlour
Plus 2 x 1/4 acre exercise paddocks
Our first dog Kabella snow blizzard at pashkym back in 1973

only 3 white afghan hounds in theUK back then. quite a story of how we managed to own this special dog

You do highlight a real issue. Are we to accept that people who are over a certain age can only get rescue dogs in their own twilight years? That seems like prejudice against anyone over a certain age and way to guarantee that new owners are going to be only a few years away from more grief (and expensive vet bills).
If the judgement was made on the exercise needs of the dog and the exercise capacity of the potential owners then that might be a different discussion.
My own dogs oblige me to walk at least 5km a day. Long may this continue.

We got our most dog arrived about year ago and she is five years ago. The owner gets strays and then offers them for responsible people. That’s her rationale. Not what the SPCA determines, Me? I’m 78 now, The dog?

The dog is a fab springer, no? Our own springer is similar but with darker markings. Snoring at my feed as I type.

Yes, lovely dogs with an excellent temperament.

Well im off to bed now and thanks to your reply it’s a nice way to end the day knowing you like me enjoy what a dog can give you,
Well said and good night,
