Totally amazing
There are so many, a lot on here already mentioned. But some that come to mind:
George Michael - Careless Whisper
Adele - Make you feel my love
Elvis Presley - American Trilogy
Phil Collins - Another day in paradise
Bobby Goldsboro - Honey (this always reminds me of my dad makes me smile as well)
Sorry Potts you are making, as they say, too much of a meal of it, personally I prefer the Elvis version.
And how about All by myself, that is truly gut wrenching. And âHelp me make it through the nightâ. Or just about anything by Patsy Cline.
I actually enjoy opera, but Potts (along with Russell Watson) is not an opera singer, merely a man who sings operatic arias, or in this case, a âpopâ song in the operatic manner. Just because he sings it in Italian does not make it any more than a âpopâ song sung in the operatic manner. Now if he were on the stage of La Scala, or even Sydney Opera House, and performing in, say La Boheme, or Cavalleria Rusticana, or even Carmen, then he would deserve high praise, but as it is he is merely one of many and only âlaudedâ because of his looks and having been on BGT. So if anyone is a Philistine, it is you, for comparing him to some of the greats, Pavarotti, Terfel, Caruso, Carreras etc.
Tell Me Thereâs A Heaven by Chris Rea.
Listen to the words if you dare but be warned!
Operatic snobbery comes to mind - or snobbery full stop.
All I can say is how insensitive you are. You are right in all you say but when I see Paul singing I take the whole man and his story in. The massive undertaking to fullfill his lifelong wish under incredible duress. With that comes the feeling in his voice - the stuggle to overcome his insecurities and to hold notes. You can tell he hasnât been trained as the âgreatsâ have been but hell he can still hold his own.
If it wasnât for Paul it wouldnât have entered the heads of many to listen to opera but now?
Elvis? Whatttttttttt?
Your âElvis whatttttt?â comment reveals which of us is the snob.
I do not deny that Mr Potts overcome insecurities etc.etc. but he is one among many who have done so. And he has obviously completely overcome them if he is capable of performing in that venue wouldnât you say?
At no time did I suggest he did not have a good voice, merely said that I prefered the Elvis version of this particular song. Potts version could be said to be âover eggingâ in the extreme. It is not an aria, merely a particularly beautiful love song. I would imagine there are several songs which would be equally as emotive were they to be translated into Italian and sung âoperaticallyâ.
I find it odd that another Welsh person would pick fault with Paulâs endeavours. Then again maybe all us Welsh are somewhat argumentative. I donât wish to argue over Paulâs singing though. Iâm gloriously happy that I can be touched by his voice to such an extent. It washes over me in quite a painful manner really and leaves itâs mark for quite a time after. His voice makes me a better person for a while. Not many singers can do that to me.
May I simply point out the above!
What a voice he had.
Of my very best friends had a picture on her wall of her father Frank Cousins with his friend Paul Robeson. She had a grandson who was mixed race and he was 7 before he could be convinced that Paul Robeson was not his grandfather
Behave yourself b/c, that is hardly a tear jerker!
So, back to the topic.
How about this one folks, it always gets me blubbing.
