Snooker World Championship

Is it just me or are the current bunch of snooker players a miserable lot with no personality. I miss the days of Jimmy White, John Parrot and Dennis Taylor.

Other characters Fred Davis, Eddie Charlton, Rex Williams.

That are a serious bunch  I suppose it’s more about money now rather than the game itself.

Yes, I suppose the golden age has gone forever. I can remember when everything stopped in our house when the snooker was on.

And the commentary…in a hushed voice …’ for those of you watching in black and white…the blue ball is behind the brown’ or something similar

Thats ok Vlad,nl didnt take it as citicism either
Would have been too bad if l did anyway?
I think when robertson and hawkins interrupted a frame and both
of them dashed for the loo together got my mind working?? LoL!

Donkeyman!

Thanks

The semi-final between Wilson and McGill the best frame ever in the history of snooker. Wilson only needs the green to win.

McGill 19 behind with 18 on the table.

Ronnie looks like he will be Champion. Not the greatest final, Kryren Wilson not playing good enough.

Result 18-8 win for O’Sullivan. Sixth win equalling Steve Davis and Ray Reardon.

A good win for Ronnie but he’s in a different class. As a final it was too one sided - probably the result of a lop sided draw. I thought either of the semi-finals would have made a more enjoyable final.

There was an interesting moment during the BBC broadcast. After the final when Ronnie was parading about with the Trophy the three chaps in the studio were wittering on and Steve Davis said perhaps Ronnie would win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year next time. The BBC anchorman Jason Mohammed brushed that comment aside by saying that there wasn’t much sport this year.

It’s criminal that O’Sullivan has never won this. Never even been nominated.

Watching coverage of the World Seniors Championship, Jimmy White playing Joe Johnson.

I picked that up, could be that it won’t be held this year as not enough to choose from. Not one player has been shortlisted for SPOTY for a while. The last snooker player to reach the top three was Stephen Hendry who came second in 1990 with Steve Davis winning it two years before.

Classic match between Hendry and Nigel Bond went the distance.

This year with reduced socially distanced spectators the finalists are Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy.

Final over two days. Think Selby will win even though he had the tougher match against Stuart Bingham with some incredibly long frames and an unusual amount of re-racks. Ran out of time so played to finish after the other semi-final.

The first mainland European player to win the final. He beat Ronnie O’Sullivan.

“Probably the most talented snooker players I have ever seen” - Ronnie O’Sullivan on Luca Brecel.

It is a strange game, and i feel it is getting better, knowing that every sport that can be timed or measured has advanced, then it follows that those the cant be timed nor measured will also have advanced, i used to enjoy a game, but was never any good… my wife never misses a game on TV yet i got to two finals [different clubs] and my wife never attended either [mm yes she is an ex-wife]… but back in the day Joe Davis was miles better than anyone and i cant remember him being beaten, i think his little brother Fred played at the crucible, now it is only an opinion, but i doubt joe would have gotten as far as Sheffield, and would be knocked out in the prelims… mind you they used different balls back in the day…

The cloths were thicker and no cue extensions, which allow modern day players to make shot that were impossible back then.

yes when i was playing every table had a long que with a long rest hung on the side of the table it was a nightmare to use, for shots near the ‘wrong’ cush. i practiced playing the shots left handed…
