My obnoxious neighbour the builder now keeps a skip on his drive .
He uses it for dumping stuff in from his business . It’s a real eyesore and it annoys everyone in the road which is open plan lawns in front .so as it takes up space on he parks all his many vehicles in front or everyone’s else’s houses
I called the council and apparently there is no law against this .
I asked could I build a corral and have a cow on the front lawn they said apparently I can .
I simply don’t believe this I shall try and ring planning today but they are big into pass the buck at that place .
Muddy, sadly, I think that you’re going to find that skips are not allowed anywhere except on a user’s drive.
You do see some on the roads, though!
Usually skips are used for a short time, anyway, but the one in your neighbour is way over the top.
I thought they had to seek some sort of council permission… but maybe that’s for when a skip is placed on the road?
I know by law, if they are on the road, they have to be lit up, so they can be seen by motorists driving at night.
This one is on his driveway, so you might be a bit snookered to do anything, Muddy. You have my commiserations as you say, it’s a real eyesore for you.
There are no laws against a skip on a drive, we’ve had one here for months, I wonder if they are charged by the day…because as far as I know, you can only have them for a limited time, of course he may own the skip.
Something like that, doesn’t bother me in the least…your own private land it can stay there forever,
Blo…y neighbours I feel for you muddy . Some are so inconsiderate. I do hope something can be done .
Deleted.as misinterpreted.
@pauline3 that’s easily done Pauline, I have mistakenly quoted someone else’s post in error many times
Ok Mags, I will delete my post, thank you.
It’s called consideration for others Pauline perhaps you haven’t heard of it .actually it doesn’t bother me that much but the neighbours at the other side have it right in front of them and his blooming truck and trailer in front of their house too .
Still what can you do when people are ignorant and thick skinned ?
Muddy, we have members here, who wouldn’t know what a skip was, so posted this one for them to view….
Its almost as if we have no rights to protect ourselfs . I had an issue with neighbours for years and spoke to my local councillor about it and he did say people who own their own homes dont have the protection of social housing or rented . It feels wrong that muddy and her neighbours have no voice it this situation. It does make me annoyed
Susan you are quite right . The council told me had it been one of their properties they could do something .
If all else fails it may be worth you and your neighbours writing a letter to this bloke and asking him to remove the skip . At least that way he will know its bothering you all and an eye sore
Best of luck
and his blooming truck and trailer in front of their house too .
Would the maximum gross weight of the combined truck & trailer exceed 3.5 tons? If so then maybe something can be done.
Any vehicle where the maximum gross weight exceeds 3.5 tons needs a Tachograph & possibly, depending upon the vehicle, also an operator’s (O ) licence. And if the vehicle does need an operators licence then it can only be operated from an authorised location, with planning permission for that purpose & not from someones drive or the side of the road.
If the vehicle does need a tacho or an O licence & if it is being operated without it. Then the vehicle is uninsured & liable to seizure.
VOSA could be your friend.

………
From 4 December 2011, if you are using a vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight of less than 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes) and are towing a small trailer with an unladen weight of less than 1,020kg the following will apply in respect of the requirement to obtain a Standard Operators Licence:
There you go. ^^^^^^👍

I don’t know if his van thing would qualify it’s one of those large but not heavy grey vans blazoned with his company name that pulls a trailer behind .The prat is slippery and it appears has quite a reputation for being a sneaky PITA .He knows all the tricks.
Sounds a bit like my new next door neighbour, Muddy. Fortunately I have the traffic calming boulders outside my house, but this guy has installed lots of stuff in his garden which intrudes above the fence eyeline (a huge gazebo, now with lighting) and a light in the garden.
But I heard something yesterday which sort of pleased but infuriated me at the same time. He used to live opposite next to my nice neighbour and she was glad when he left (albeit owing rent, allegedly!!). She said he was noisy and you can’t believe anything coming out of his mouth. I don’t know how many years ago this was because there are children now and this lady doesn’t know the GF. So I am hoping that at some point they stop paying rent there, or fall foul of their tenancy agreement and get chucked out. We live in hope, eh?
But it seems my quiet times in the garden are now over.

If it is transit size. Then it is already 3.5 tons & any trailer would put it over the limit for needing a tachograth. If the maximum permitted weight of both trailer & van, regardless of the vans size takes it over 3.5 tons, then it needs a tachograth. And if it’s a proper van & not a duel use van, then it will need an O licence too if pulling the trailer. Most car & thus also van drivers/ users have no clues abut tacho law or O licencing & thus it is a law many breech when operating for hire & reward. That is as business operators.
My exsperience as a HGV & PSV driver is that the Police are largely ignorant of the law when it comes to commercially operated vehicles. And that VOSA are much more likely to take action over breeches of motoring law than the Police.
With tacho’s & O licencing it is not the weight the vehicle is being driven on the road at, that matters. But the potential legal maximum, it could be driven at. Also if the vehicle needs a tacho then there are two sets of laws that could be getting broken. One set covers the driver, another set the vehicle operator.
