Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes has been bought out by by a Canadian company - Saputo - who make the plastic stuff known as Cathedral City!
Not really surprising as takeovers have been happening for years in the food industry, Itâs surprising how many smaller companies are owned by a few larger companies. I tried to find something up-to-date about what companies own British food companies but could only find this from 2016. Interesting but obviously not the latest information:
This link to more recent information shows the top 10 companies and also has options to read about the various categories of food and drink:
There are three things I would never buy in a supermarket - meat, fish and cheese.
Prior to the plague I bought from a cheesemonger in town. During the plague I have had my cheese delivered from the Creamery at Hawes. Letâs hope these Canadians continue with the proper recipes and donât do what the Americans did to Cadburyâs chocolates!!
Not a lot of choice other than supermarkets in a lot of places. Where I live is one such place as the smaller, independent shops have now gone due to the supermarkets. There are farm shops but they are so far away itâs hardly worth it with the cost of that food and fuel to get there.
Yes, I did read the Cadbury recipe was changed and their chocolate now tasted not as good as it once was. Not being much of a chocolate eater I have no personal experience of this. Cheese I do like but itâs not good for me in as much as that and other foods tend to make my weight increase. Not wishing to have another âyou are pre-diabeticâ warning at the moment I am trying to lose the additional pounds / kilos put on over the lockdown.
Iâve been eating Cathedral City for weeks now and I think itâs really nice.
I have used it for cooking, JBR, and it has been OK - but I am reluctant to buy any cheese that comes in neat bricks and wrapped in plastic.
I use to love my cheddar, high cholesterol put paid to that .But the quality over the years went down imo,
Same here with me. High cholesterol I was given medication for, that was soon given up as it made me so unwell. I keep that in check with diet and exercise The other âproblemâ with cheese is that it tends to make me put on weight, that caused other problems so unfortunately itâs very little cheese nowadays.
I just looked at our packet this morning and saw that the company HQ seems to be in Dublin rather than Canada. Of course, everything is âinternationalâ now, isnât it?
I agree. Cadburyâs âchocolateâ isnât really chocolate at all now, and I avoid it like the plague.
Why? Resealable bags keep it fresh.
Marge and I buy cheese from a cheesemonger if weâre out somewhere and we see one, but Iâm afraid we donât have any around here.
me too. itâs very nice in a sandwich or salad
It canât be desperately bad as it has a âby royal appointmentâ symbol!
Oh we could do with a thread on that subject alone!
