Shane McGowan Funeral - lead singer of the Pogues

It was very moving to see the funeral of Shane McGowan - not everyones idea of good music or good singing - but a notary character. I was also a fan of the writer of “dirty old town” which Shane sang a lot. He also sometimes linked up with one of Ewan McColls daughters who I believe was tragically killed in a jet ski accident in Mexico? The Music from both of them is reminiscent of earlier English folk music including Scots/Irish and Welsh. McColls parents were Scottish and Shane Irish of course. Interesting to see Johnny Depp paying homage there too. I often wondered whether Shane and Ewan ever met - anyone know?

He was a good lyric writer though.

A rainy night in Soho.

I’ve been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I’ve cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways

We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into Heaven
Some of them fell into Hell

I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms
On a rainy night in Soho
The wind was whistling all its charms

I sang you all my sorrows
You told me all your joys
Whatever happened to that old song?
To all those little girls and boys

Sometimes I’d wake up in the morning
The ginger lady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I’d hear you talking in my head

I’m not singing for the future
I’m not dreaming of the past
I’m not talking of the first times
I never think about the last

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there’s a light I hold before me
You’re the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

yes wonderful sang and played don piano by one of aussies singers ???

very moving :joy: :innocent:

very much out of tune but in its own way beautiful - it talks about the old countries set in a snowy New York! both lead singers now deceased - great shame

For who?

for the entire world of entertainment - it may not suit you and many others but they were part of a larger picture and ewan McColls daughter sang on this one - now Ewan is one of the stalwarts of UK folk music for eons - he wrote dirty old town - right? - his contributions to the folk scene of uk is immense. His daughter sang with shane Mc about xmas day in NY
