Saudi princes are considering proposals to build an apartment block
stretching inland from the red sea ??
It is planned to be 500 metres tall and 200 wide and will be covered in
mirrors !!
It is expected to take 20yrs to complete !!
Sounds like another enviromental disaster about to happen ??
I forgot to mention that the building will be 170 kms long,( thats 100 miles !!)
and will stretch from the coast to the mountains !!
So cutting the coastal plain in two ??
Can you see any benefit this building will bestow other than massaging
the ego of these “princes” ??
In a word - No!
That will be fun for Air Traffic Control!
The promotional material is striking: two mirror-encased skyscrapers stretching more than 100 miles across a swathe of desert and mountain terrain, providing a future home for 9 million people. Is it the ultimate in high-density living, or a grandiose science fiction fantasy?
In short, economists, architects and analysts are not quite sure. So extravagant is Saudi Arabia’s plan to create an urban utopia that even those working on the project, known as the Line, do not yet know if its scale and scope can ever be realised.
Pie in the sky …
It looks positivley horrendous!
@Omah , Thanks for the details Omah !
The danger is that with that much wealth the prince is quite likely to try
and do it ??
And l am sure there are plenty of architects queueing up to encourage him ??
Maybe it could be a way of getting some money back from the energy
price increase
Exactly DM! And also, given its reflective nature, what happenes when the sun shines on it? We’ll all be blinded! It’ll burn holes in the atmosphere all by its own!
Trying to out do the Great Wall Of China .
Ghastly.
Regardless of the ugliness, feasibility and cost (not a good start to any project) there is one thing to acknowledge here. At least the Saudi prince is aware that the oil that gave his country its wealth and influence is not going to last forever - and that they need to plan what sort of economy will they have in 20 or 30 years time. That is different from many other countries that seem to just react the existing changes and do little planning or investment for the future.
Not sure this 100 mile long city is the answer though.
@Ripple , l predict that IF it gets built then after a few years the mirrors
will all be scratched by the sandstoms , and the sand will have built up
on the windward side of it, converting it into a sand dune !!
The prince will not be amused !!
I suspect the designers/architects will have taken that into consideration.
But why not build it?
Did some research and picked up this …from The Architectural Digest
Saudia Arabia is planning to invest between $100–$200 billion to build a green oasis in the desert—a futuristic city with no cars, no streets, and zero net carbon emissions.
Announced this month by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, “the Line” is a 106-mile-long belt of hyperconnected communities stretching from the mountains of northwest Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea.
But unlike the polluting metropolises of today, this city of 1 million will be powered by “100% clean energy,” with residents ferried about by “autonomous mobility solutions” and ultra-high-speed transit.
The Line is laid in three layers: a surface layer for pedestrians, plus two subterranean layers for transport and infrastructure. The design, says Bin Salman, will preserve 95% of the region’s natural environment.
@Vlad Dyou think so Vlad ?
I suspect the designers/:architets dont care, probably the madder the
concept, the more dosh they can charge ??
Apart from that it will stop any wild life from migrating up and down the
coastal plain and it may cause the deaths of thousands of birds from
flying into the mirrors ??
And, not only that it will be a long camel ride if you want to get to the other
side. ??
Next question !!
Made your mind up then?
A link for the non Luddites
@Vlad , That link you put up is definitely for non- luddites Vlad!
It sounds much like the speil we had for HS2 !!
But l ask you, realy, robot dinosaurs ! Luminous sand to provide light,/
Automatic cloud seeding/ electrolosis to produce hydrogen and oxygen ??
not to mention the fact that the glass for the mirrors and windows will
require oodles of energy ? It will take years to get rid of the carbon it creates !!
Yes. I am a Luddite, l believe that " less is more, and more is less "
I bet you said the same about the pyramids
