Remember the Loo Paper wars?

A customer in Sydney pulled a knife on another customer who grabbed the last pack of Loo Paper.
Panicked customers started running higgledy-piggledy to escape the Pandemonium.
Packs of 18 rolls were being offered on Gumtree for $400.
We’re a weird mob.

I’ve recently been very disappointed to find that the Waitrose value loo paper roll is suddenly half the size it was. I was delighted that I’d had the foresight to buy a 24 roll bumper pack of these before lockdown, so we didn’t have to worry about running out for quite a while.

I’ve noticed the same, and yet, their profits, like Tescos and many others, have significantly increased/tripled since the pandemic. The greed is astounding.

The absurd thing is that the panic buying of loo paper in Australia was because people thought it was made in China and hence could become scarce whereas in fact it is made in this country from local wood chips.

As it happened at the time I had just bought an eighteen pack of Coles own brand loo paper which took me through the entire silly matter.

There does however appear to be a genuine shortage of eggs due to avian flu though personally I have never run out (so far).

I noticed not many eggs on the shelves here in Perth.
Not sure if panic buying or supply issues.

Sales are up at Waitrose since the pandemic, so it seems they have decided they don’t need to tempt more discerning customers in with the loo roll.

It was the only reason I would travel there and I would always buy more than just the loo roll. They have probably worked out that the profit from those items doesn’t outweigh the discount they make on the loo roll.

I’ve now found sainsburys do a “larger roll” pack. My main issue with a lot of loo rolls is that you have to keep changing them so often. Particularly the quilted variety which are a total con. Waitrose are now quilting a smaller roll with a bigger cardboard hole - thanks to Meg by the way who recommended these as the best value big rolls quite a few years ago. All good things end, but it was a good run of loo happiness all these years.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…

No one’s likely to get lavish with this particular brand!

is that the tracing paper variety? I remember the shock when first starting school.

It most certainly was!
Awful stuff, I shan’t elaborate.

@Bretrick I’ve never had a problem sourcing loo rolls. I’ve bought Kimberly Clark in bulk from the cash-n-carry I’m registered with, for longer than I can remember and it’s always been exceptionally good value compared with high street retail.

.

I’ve always got too many packs of loo rolls, yes I admit it. I buy a pack every week with my other messages.

I ended up buying rolls from Ryman or somewhere similar when we eventually ran out. It was a massive pack of unfamiliar texture.
