I Want You For Myself (1931) -

A popular song from 1931
Words and music by Irving Berlin

Lyrics

You are the sweetest thing in all creation
But when you fool around the way you do
I must keep my eye on you
I’m goin’ to take you out of circulation
Because it seems to be the only thing to do

I don’t want to share you with somebody else
I want you for myself, entirely for myself
I could never spare you to somebody else
I want you for myself, entirely for myself
There is only one of you
No other could be found
I want all or none of you
Don’t pass yourself around
I don’t want to share you with somebody else
I want you for myself, entirely for myself

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Didn’t it rain, children

Didn’t it rain children
Talk about rain oh my Lord
Didn’t it fall didn’t it fall
Didn’t it fall my Lord didn’t it rain

Didn’t it rain children
Talk about rain oh my Lord
Didn’t it fall didn’t it fall
Didn’t it fll my Lord didn’t it rain

Oh it rained forty days
And it rained forty nights
There was no land no where in sight
God send the angel to spread the news
He haste his wings and away he flew
To the East to the West
To the North to the South
All day all night how it rained how it rained

Didn’t it rain children
Talk about rain oh my Lord
Didn’t it fall didn’t it fall
Didn’t it fall my Lord didn’t it rain

Some at the window some at the door
Some said Noah can’t you take a little more
No no said Noah no no my friends
The nature got to keep you can’t get in
I told you I told you a long time ago
You wouldn’t hear me you disobey me
Lord send the angel a warning to you
It began to rain and now you are through

Well it rained forty days
Forty nights without stopping
Noah was glad
When the rain stopped dropping
Knock at the window knock at the door
Come on brother Noah
Can’t you take any more
No no my brothers you are full of sin
God has the key you can’t get in
Would you listen how it rained

Didn’t it rain children
Talk about rain oh my Lord
Didn’t it fall didn’t it fall
Didn’t it fall my Lord didn’t it rain

Didn’t it rain children
Talk about rain oh my Lord
Didn’t it fall didn’t it fall
Didn’t it fall my Lord didn’t it rain

A local group I helped with played at the 2 ii,s cafe in Soho several times .going down to the small cellar room underneath the cafe and the tiny stage was an experience. People even sat on the stairs to hear the group play

You Can’t Get Lovin’ (1919)

popular song from 1919
Words and music by Will E. Skidmore and Jack Baxley

Lyrics

I’ve cried my last time over any Gal
It ain’t a bit of use
I treat ’em all the best that I know how
But in return I get abuse
I “fell hard” for one certain Miss
But she neve loved me
So, I sat right down and figured out
And the answer seems to be

You can get WATER where there ain’t any WELL
You can hear RINGING where there ain’t any BELL
You can get PEACHES where there ain’t any TREES
And you can get HONEY where there ain’t any BEES
You can get HEARTACHES where there ain’t any PAIN
You can get SUNSHINE always after the RAIN
You can often find HEAVEN without going ABOVE
But you CAN’T get LOVIN’ where there ain’t any LOVE

I used to love that Gal with all my soul
I’ll say she sure could “Vamp”
When she’d go way just for a single day
Oh! how my poor heart it would “Cramp”
Never will I grieve any more
They don’t play a square game
What’s the use to try to figure ’em out
‘Cause the answer’s still the same
