Probe after British F-35 fighter crashes in Mediterranean

An RAF F-35B Lightning

The pilot ejected and has safely returned to the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth and an investigation has begun, the MoD added.

The incident occurred at 10:00 GMT over international waters and no other aircraft were involved.

The MoD said it would be inappropriate to comment during the investigation.

The investigation is likely to focus on potential technical or human error, BBC defence correspondent Jonathan Beale said.

There are eight UK F-35s on the carrier and 12 from the US Marine Corps.

The supersonic fighters, which cost £92m each, are based at RAF Marham in Norfolk.

O-oh … :open_mouth:

The jet is thought to be in the sea and has yet to be recovered.

All other F35s are operational and training flying continues.

Next time, fill up at the right pump :wink::point_right::grin:

@Bruce , Could UK afford to go to war anymore ?
Especially with these new aircraft carriers that require a whole fleet
to protect them ?
Donkeyman! :thinking::thinking:

Nothing special about these new aircraft carriers. Aircraft carriers are always escorted by a flotilla to protect them, it was always so. BTW it is the same thing with refuelling ships (oilers) they are always protected and kept out of harms way

By plunging into international waters, the crash triggered a scramble to find the next-generation jet from the sea bed before it could be reached by Russia. It’s thought to be the first time an F35-B has crashed in such an area.

The technology aboard the US-designed aircraft, including top secret radar and sensors, is hugely sensitive as it allows the F-35 to fly ‘unseen’ in hostile territory at supersonic speeds. However, it is likely that China already knows all there is to know about the jet due to spying.

The aircraft was located on Wednesday afternoon and the site on the sea bed will be manned by an Anglo-US dive security team until the jet is lifted to the surface.

The operation, shrouded in secrecy, is understood to involve divers, miniature submarines and inflatable bags which may be used to lift the plane to the surface of the Mediterranean.

Fascinating … I hope that it’s successful and that we get to see a documentary on the recovery.

@Bruce , Ain’t that wot l sez Brucy ??

It would seem others are interested in the £100 million British F-35 warplane:

No, that it not what you said at all Assman, what you did was ask questions in your usual illiterate way. Which my post answered.

Anything else I can help you with?

@Bruce , Doohh!!
