Premium Bonds - have you won anything?

You seem to have regressed. We covered this fallacy about 2 pages back. I guess you don’t read well. Here’s the salient part . . . . again !

"If you have £100 today and you buy an “asset” with that £100 then what happens?

The asset either gains value (appreciates) or loses value (depreciates).

Given there ARE assets that appreciate in the world, anyone who simply sits on £100 of cash, stuffing it in their mattress IS ACTUALLY LOSING MONEY.

They are losing the money they ought to have made through basic appreciation (which could be asset appreciation or bank interest and so on).

The notion that you can not lose with Premium Bonds (because you can always pull your money back out) is utterly false and is the primary selling point that they rely on to get mug punters to hand over their dosh, mug punters who don’t understand the basics of finance."

So, let’s be completely clear, leaving your money in PBs means YOU ARE LOSING MONEY. You are losing the profits you would have made had you invested it properly.

A good article from the renowned financial chappy Martin Lewis

Martin Lewis: this is why you should dump Premium Bonds

"Even if you line up everyone with £1,000 worth of Premium Bonds in order of their year’s winnings, the person halfway along would have won… not a penny! In fact, you’d need to walk past nearly two-thirds of the line until you hit the first £25 winner. "

And those of you who do have PBs, put your numbers into this calculator

Old Grey Fox has just won another £50 on the bonds…£75 quid so far…:mini::mini::mini:

Well done Bob, £25 for me this month

Congratulations Mags…
Just waiting for the ‘Big One’ …It must be one of us…

… or we could share, Bob

I have one premium bond which was given to me as a Christmas Box back in the 50s…i think. 1AK something something. Never had a nibble. Anyone wanna buy it? 15/- and it’s yours.

Fine by me Mags…

Nothing this month…bad start to the year.
:-D:-D

Interesting fact PB now pays 1.4% interest

Just renewed my Cash ISA last month and I will be getting 0.75% interest.

Another £125 for me so these last two months have been lucky for me .

And what of all the months/years where you won nothing?

Odds of winning £100 are 1 in 2,406,749

Odds of winning £25 are 1 in 24,500

It’s a losing proposition

I started the year with 3 x £25 so I’m a happy bunny

One day I might win a million

No I can confidently say that’s never going to happen.

Your chances of winning the £1million prize are a staggering

1 in 36 BILLION !

In your life time you won’t have time to participate in more than a few thousand actual draws. Clinging to this ridiculous notion is pure folly.

You are losing money all the while you leave your hard-earned with someone else to speculate and gamble with.

Yes I guess you are right Realist.
I should have put it into a fund
Fundsmith Equity Fund made 35.05 % last year .
Fortunately I have a little invested in that too.
Hindsight is a great thing
However there is always the risk the stack market will crash and then take years to recover .
Are you going to tell us what you think is a good investment?

I spread my money out between P&O and Thomas Cook and got bugger all returns…:-(…Couple of good holidays though, so good I have invested in P&O again this year…:-D:-D:-D

Good for you OGF
you have invested in experiences always a good thing.

£25 last month I’m happy with that, certainly looking at what we got from them last year far out strips what we get putting it in the savings account.

Thanks Muddy, you can’t take it with you, money is only useful for earthbound activities, and I’ve got a thirst for travel…

Too right Julie, and if you just want to sit on your money and keep it safe while having the opportunity to win a few bob I can’t think of a better place…
