The electricity users of the east coast states have been told there is a shortage of electricity due to the cold weather and breakdowns in the now badly maintained coal fired power stations. Gas prices have made the gas fired generators produce power at a loss so they will not run after the government put a cap on the wholesale price of electricity. (So much for Scotty from Marketing’s gas fired recovery!)
25% of the coal fired generators are out of service or short of coal.
It was only last year that the Coalition government boasted that power prices were coming down.
Australia will run out of air before it runs out of coal.
In WA things are sweetness and light with gas prices stable because they reserved 15% of gas produced for the domestic market.
@Bruce ,. How can you be short of coal Brucy ??
Are you exporting too much of it?
WA reserved 15% of gas ‘produced’ for the domestic market. ??
What is the source of your gas ‘produced’ ?
Donkeyman!
with all that sunshine what has happened to using solar power? i would have thought heavily investing in houses having their own may go a long way to sort out power problems
@Bruce , Thanks for that Brucy, lve been doing a bit of digging myself too !
It seems that you produce approx twice as much gas as you use,
And as l suspected you export 80% of what you produce ?
Same story with your coal too !
Perhaps you should follow WA Policy and keep some of your production
for the domestic market ??
You never know when another wet, cold year will come along ??
Donkeyman!
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has taken the extraordinary step of suspending the spot market for wholesale electricity.
The electricity sector has been dealing with soaring costs, forcing AEMO to cap prices and compel generators to offer their services.
AEMO has now suspended the spot market entirely across the National Electricity Market, saying it is impossible to ensure reliable electricity supply under the current circumstances.
The suspension will be reviewed daily in each state.
So much for the operation of a free market, who’s great idea was that?
The unprecedented intervention in Australia’s east coast energy market will be gradually removed over the next day, with authorities increasingly confident in the supply of wholesale electricity.
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) last week seized control of the east coast energy market for the first time in its history after days of volatility put several states at risk of blackouts.
The federal government backed the intervention, acknowledging the energy market had effectively failed, and credited the AEMO with successfully managing to avoid both blackouts and load shedding as temperatures on the east coast plummeted.
