Pottery at evening classes

Many years ago I went to pottery classes once a week at our local school, with a friend. We did this for several years, with several different instructors, OH’s were left at home with the kids & it was a night out for us. I made many items, but our last tutor said no more ‘Whimsies’ (‘Hey!’, said I, ‘I collect those!’ :grinning: ) I want you to make something large & sensible.
So I made this….

I haven’t done pottery since as the school stopped having pottery classes for pupils & evening class students.

Love those ,Tiff…I prefer those to ornaments that are mass produced.

You can tell they are originals…:+1:

It’s something I like to look at and study the detail…how long did it take to make?

Tiffany … very nice … I’ve seen lamps like that selling in craft shops.
They’re open at the back with a light bulb inside so at night when you plug them in it shines through the windows and looks like someone’s at home.

Four evening classes. We had templates we’d drawn & cut out for the pieces of the houses. We had to prepare the clay & roll it out, cut around the shapes to make walls etc then leave to dry out a bit, then we suck it together & did the clay decorations, flowers etc. We then had the items biscuit fired, then added the glazes & finally it was glaze fired. Takes a long time.
Have you ever watched The Great Pottery Throw Down on TV?

It’s a brilliant program & what we used to do, though not as professionally as the contestants on that program. :grinning:

I didn’t do that to mine, it’s only ornamental, but jolly heavy. I had to pay for it by weight once it was finished, that was a shock. :grinning:

Wow that’s awesome Tiffany! :023:

Brilliant cottage, Tiffany. When I went to Pottery classes we never progressed beyond ashtrays - which was a waste of time for me - I do not allow anyone to smoke (or vape) on my property! Does your cottage have a floor? I think I might have left an open bit in the floor so I could put a tea light inside.

Yes it has a bottom, ST, by the time I thought about turning it into a lamp, it was too late to do it.

That is stunning, Tiffany! If you have whimsy in you, being "sensible just doesn’t cut it, does it?!

@Tiffany
Your little houses are great Tiff :slightly_smiling_face:
I can see the work that went into them .

I used to go to potter classes after my husband died, I found it took my thoughts away from my situation . I wasn’t very good on 'the wheel ’ but managed a few vases.

What I did enjoy was making little animals, mice, badgers, hedgehogs but best of all wall tiles and and plaques with little pictures and mottoes on them.
I gave them away to the stalls in the village hall sales.

Thank you, Pixie.

Those are what our teacher called Whimsies, Meg, originally made by Wade, well they still are. I made a lot of those & though I shouldn’t have, I used to sell them in a craft shop on a farm up the road.
Funny thing was years later at a car boot sale someone had some of my little animals for sale on their stall. I told her I’d made them, she didn’t believe me til I pointed out on the bottoms of them my initials & the year. :grinning: No, I didn’t buy them back. :grinning:
