Prime Minister’s Question Time

The Prime Minister answers questions from MPs in the Commons every sitting Wednesday from 12pm to 12.30pm.

The session normally starts with a routine question from an MP about the Prime Minister’s engagements. This is known as an ‘open question’ and means that the MP can then ask a supplementary question on any subject.

Following the answer, the MP then raises a particular issue, often one of current political significance. The Leader of the Opposition then follows up on this or another topic, being permitted to ask a total of six questions. The Leader of the Opposition is the only MP who is allowed to come back with further questions.

Most MPs will table the same question about engagements and if they do, only their names will appear on the question book. After the first engagements question has been asked, any other MPs who have tabled the same question are simply called to ask an untabled, supplementary question.

This means, in theory, that the Prime Minister will not know what questions will be asked of them. However, the Prime Minister will be extensively briefed by government departments in anticipation of likely subjects they could be asked about.

More information about how an MP can submit an Oral Question and take part at Question Time is given at: MPs’ Guide to Procedure - Oral Questions

To avoid deviating from topic, I refer you to other threads relating to the fact that MPs never wanted her in the first place!!

May seemed keen on backing Truss at her first PMQ’s, wonder what she thinks now.

Yes , who can make the most noise, maybe unwritten but that’s what it seems like.

Prime Minister Liz Truss is on her way to the House of Commons, where Prime Minister’s Questions is due to get under way in 20 minutes.

Shouldn’t she be put on the back of a gun carriage and towed down there with a band playing a funeral March?

LT seems to be wearing the same clothes since Friday:

She used to be a-dress-a-day person …

Blimey … LT just can’t answer a question … she just turns it into whataboutery … :man_shrugging:

I note, however, that LT is now “clear” …

“The Energy Support Guarantee” seems is be her solution for everything … :man_shrugging:

Unless I misheard, Truss seems to have clearly confirmed she is keeping Pension Triple Lock - at least, she said she is “committed to it” - but she’s said that about quite a few things that she has now had to U-Turn about.

The new Chancellor was sitting beside her when she said it, so maybe he has ruled out the possibility of ditching the Triple Lock now - perhaps he’s decided they daren’t risk upsetting the Grey Tory Vote!

I wonder if he was actually aware that the triple lock guarantee was the policy before she said it (probably on a whim as a defensive outburst).

Truss says she and and the chancellor are “completely committed” to the triple lock.

This is a change from what No 10 said yesterday.

Doesn’t matter anyway, as she’ll just u turn anyway and let someone else (ie Hunt) carry the can.

Mark Menzies (Con) asks for an assurance that fracking companies will not be involved in deciding if there is local consent for fracking.

Truss says there will be a robust system in place for ensuring there is consent for fracking. Jacob Rees-Mogg, the business secretary, will say more about that later today.

I will be waiting … :069:

Sir Keir opened with a retort about an upcoming book about Ms Truss’s time in office.

“Apparently it’s going to be out by Christmas. Is that the release date or the title?” he joked.

Nice one, Sir Keir …

I wonder if Truss will resort to the stance that Cleverly attempted the other day: “we acted on the mistakes”. As if they actually did a great job.
Err, no, the mistakes could have been avoided by keeping the senior civil servants at the treasury and involving the OBR before deciding on delivering the mini-budget. In fact, these were exactly the mistakes intentionally made by Truss and Kwertang.

LT has optical deficiency syndrome - it leads to distorted perception and delusions of grandeur …

I’d add delusions of competency. Someone at some time must have repeatedly told Truss that she is very, very good at what she does (but just don’t look at the actual results of what you have done, Lizzie, no need, eh?)

Did anyone count the number of references she made to the energy price cap (weird how she didn’t mention that it wouldn’t be extended to 2 years as per her original policy), the NI rate (which has already gone through parliament), or the Railway strike (which is partly down to her gov’s policies anyway)?

What were those light interludes about sporting achievements about? They might just as well got the tubs of ice cream out and walk up and down the aisles selling them along with some cups of orange squash, while an organist came up from the floor to play a ditty or two to fill the time.
