The Government is investigating whether the ex PM, Scotty from Marketing, was secretly sworn in as a minister in other portfolios. The furore is because it was secret and that the Governor General was part of it.
One of Scottie’s predecessors, ex PM Malcolm Turnbull, called it “sinister” and undemocratic.
Scotty is now saying he also took over the Social Services ministry. In actual fact he is “Not denying” he did. It certainly says a lot about the character of the man.
It goes from bad to worse, it now appears that Scotty was secretly sworn into at least seven portfolios! Only one Minister knew he had done it. Even his (ex) ministers think he should resign from Parliament over this.
Judging by the outrage generated within his own party as well as the (ex)opposition and academia it looks like it will be a one off thing. The cabinet system of government requires transparency and this action says more about the character of Scotty than short comings in the system, I expect there will be legislation to stop it happening again.
The former prime minister’s actions in assuming power of five ministerial portfolios was legal.
The solicitor-general’s advice focused specifically on the question of whether Mr Morrison’s appointment to the department of industry, science, energy and resources was valid.
Even though the appointments were legal and valid, the solicitor-general’s advice highlighted the issue with Mr Morrison and his department keeping it a secret from Parliament and the public.
The solicitor-general said the capacity for the public and the Parliament to know which ministers have been appointed to administer which departments “is critical to the proper functioning of responsible government”.
What is this about?
At various times in 2020 and 2021, Scott Morrison was appointed as the joint minister of health, finance, treasury, home affairs and industry, science, energy and resources.
Some of his own ministers didn’t know about these appointments.
Mr Morrison said it was necessary for him to have these additional powers during the pandemic so he could act in the national interest.
